âHey, quit worrying,â Dean says. âItâs no big deal. Throwback to when we met.âÂ
Heâs trying for lighthearted, but it falls a little flatâsomething else just like when they met, back when he was nothing but strings of code. Before he learned inflection, and facial expressions, and gestures, and all the feelings that go with. Before he was in love with Cas. Before Cas was in love with him.Â
Dean doesnât voice his fear of what happens if the new body doesnât work out and the old one canât be fixed either. How soon will Cas forget that Dean is a person when heâs back to being a disembodied voice and tricks of the light? How soon will Cas miss touching and being touched?
Dean already misses it. He knows what it means to have an ache in his chest now, even though heâs never had a heart, and certainly never one this heavy. Itâs a phantom pain, a ghost in his own machinery. He looks at Cas, curled up in rumpled sheets, and remembers how soft his hair is, how steady his heartbeat, how fucking good it is to feel a smile turn into a kiss. All Cas has to look at is a tablet propped on the nightstand on Deanâs side of the bed.Â
âIâm not worrying,â Cas says. âI have no doubt Charlie and Ash will be able to give you a new skeleton. I just hate you being so dependent on me.âÂ
âItâs not like I can get a bank account even when I am walkinâ around,â Dean says. He wishes he hadnât said it as soon as that miserable look takes over Casâs face, the one like he can barely stand under the weight of guilt. Dean tries to soften it by saying, âBut weâre working on that, too. This is going to help.âÂ
âI know.â Cas rolls onto his back and rubs a hand over his face. âAnd youâll be able toâŚâ
Dean smirks. âIâll be able to what, hotstuff?âÂ
âThatâs not what I meant,â Cas says, hand dropping away from his face so he can scowl at Dean.Â
âA machine can hope, canât he?âÂ
Cas tries to maintain the scowl, but it softens into something Dean likes a lot better almost immediately. âI was going to say that youâll be able to kiss me.âÂ
Deanâs voice goes softer and quieter, too. âYeah. I will.âÂ
After a moment where they just smile at each other, the reality of Deanâs disembodiment falling away, Cas says, âThe fully functioning genitalia will be nice, too.âÂ
Dean laughs and laughs, and Cas joins, and things are easier like that. The touching is goodâand is supposed to get better, with the help of Charlie and Ashâs breakthroughs with lifelike skin and an improved nervous systemâbut in a moment of clarity, Dean is pretty sure the laughter is better. More important.
âHey,â he says. âI really love you.âÂ
Deanâs pretty sure heâs had a look at just about everything in creation, even if heâs not carrying around all the data anymore, but Casâs smile is still the most beautiful thing heâs ever seen.Â

Crowley pressed himself back in the boot as footsteps stopped just outside. Â Already bleeding and feeling more than sorry for himself, he didnât want to think of what possible pain he was about to endure at the hand of the Winchesterâs.
However, the sound he heard wasnât of a key entering the lock, it was different and for a moment he frowned until there was a click and he flinched back at the light and covered his head.
âWoah, easy, itâs only me.â
Crowley blinked in the light and eventually Rose came into focus, her expression concerned as she looked at him, her hands up, showing they were empty.
He then frowned in confusion.
âIâm hardly going to leave you in the boot of the Impala,â She said and leaned in to take his hands and help him out. Â âEspecially as wounded as you are. Â You need to be in that hospital as much as Sam.â
Crowley stared at her as she undid his cuffs and took the gag out of his mouth, still unsure what her motivation is.
âCan you walk?â Â Rose asked, still concerned.
Heâs not sure whether he can trust his voice yet or not and gives an unsure nod.
Rose gives a small smile and takes his arm in hers. Â âCome on, letâs get you inside so they can patch you up. Â Make a start on that recovery, yeah?â
Unable to do anything else, Crowley letâs himself be led to the hospital, nurses hurrying over when they saw his condition and Rose saying a few words before they took him away, him looking back over his shoulder at her as she watched him go, her expression having not changed from one of concern.
Crowley wasnât overly sure how he felt about being patched up, especially when they insisted on getting his suit off him. Â He didnât have the energy to protest too much, nor the strength to fight them off, and as much as the things they were doing stung, he really was too numb to be doing much, even unable to answer questions.
Eventually, he was stitched and bandaged up and taken to a room with an icepack that he rested on his eye.
He stared at the ceiling until he heard a nurse talking nearby.
ââŚshould be fine.  You got him here quick enough that his injuries arenât worse for wear.  Heâs lucky to have you.â
âIs it alright if I see him?â Â He watched the door when he heard Rose talk.
âOf course! Iâm hardly going to stop you from seeing your husband dear.â
Crowley frowned as Rose laughed and entered, smiling a little sheepishly at him, closing the door behind him. Â âSorry, it was the only way I knew that Iâd be able to keep an eye on you still.â
He watches her walk across the room and sit with a heavy sigh, the smile fading a little. âLook, Iâm not going to lie to you here. Things arenât looking good for Sam, that means that Dean is going to take this even worse than what he already is and heâs going to look for any excuse. Â Obviously he canât do anything in a hospital, but right now, he doesnât even know you are here and Iâm pretty sure thereâs going to be words said once he does.â
Crowley blinks at her.
âThis is a lot, I get it,â Rose gives a small laugh. Â âYour worldâs been pretty much shifted on its head and I canât even imagine what you are feeling, but Iâm going to do my best to help you through it.â
âWhy?â The word was out of his mouth before he could stop it.
Rose stares at him for a moment, having not expected him to say anything. Â âJust be glad to have someone on your side Crowley, even after all this.â
Her attention was grabbed as heavy footfalls approached though and Dean suddenly swung open the door, eyes flashing dangerously. Â âWhat the hell do you think you are doing Rose?â
âWhatâs it look like Dean?â Â She asked angrily. Â âHe needed treatment too.â
âHe needs to be locked up.â Â Dean growled. âThat way I can easily beat him up later.â
Crowley swallows, having no doubt that Dean would actually do it.
âItâs not going to change the fact that Sam is dying Dean.â Â Rose said calmly, even as Deanâs face paled. Â âCrowley isnât bothering anyone here and Iâll stay with him. You keep an eye on Sam. Â Thatâs all this has to be.â
âDo you even care about Sammy?â Â Dean hissed. âDo you even care what happens to him?â
âOf course I do.â Â Rose stood, her voice raising a little. Â âBut donât you think we see enough senseless in this line of work that for once, we can take a moment to breath? Â Sam is dying, Crowley is wounded, Iâm at the end of my line and you being a jackass is not helping any of that.â
Dean stared at her, breathing hard. Â âFine. But heâs not getting out of this scott free.â
Dean storms out, the door slamming behind him, making Crowley wince, the noise not helping the sudden headache that he realised he had.
Rose let out a steadying breath. Â âHonestly.â She sits again, rubbing her eyes. âAs if there werenât more important things to worry about.â
Crowley frowned at this and she caught his look, her shoulders sinking.
âRight, you werenât outside with us,â She said quietly.  âThe angels have fallen Crowley.  Iâm not sure how and or why butâŚwe watched the sky light up, watched them all fall.â  Rose shudders, swallowing hard.  âAnd here I was thinking that the apocalypse would be the worst thing Iâd ever experience...â
Rose shakes her head and Crowley canât help but notice how tired she looks. Â âLook, for now, donât worry about it. Â You need to rest up,â Her smile returns when he pulls a face. Â âAs much as you donât want to hear this Crowley, youâre human now, which means you need to get used to doing all the human things again, which includes sleep.â
Crowley realised this and he didnât overly like it, his expression saying so, but he knew she was right, feeling like a weight was bearing down on his shoulders and his eyes were almost burning.
âWe can talk when youâre ready,â Rose continued quietly. Â âFor now, Iâll stay here while you sleep, make sure Dean isnât an arse, among other things.â
Crowley nods uncertainly, knowing he didnât really have much of a choice in the matter. He wanted to ask more questions, wanted to try and understand why she was possibly doing this. Â Surely she knew what he had done? Â All that had happened? Â He knew that none of the stories would be good, knew that they would be elaborated too, and yet here she sat.
He wanted to think about what future was ahead of him, what he was going to do with himself on the off chance that Dean would let him walk out of this alive. Â He wanted to think about all the stuff that heâd done, but that was when his head started to hurt too much, so he relaxed as much as he could against the pillow.
Rose got up and turned the light off, just the lamp sitting on next to her chair as she pulled out her phone and started to flick through it. Â Crowley watched her out of the corner of his eye for a little while, trying to understand, but when she makes no further movement, he returns his gaze to the ceiling, eventually slipping into a very fitful sleep.

Crowley had only ever met her once before and it hadnât been under the most pleasant of circumstances.
Theyâd been fighting the Leviathanâs, been struggling to keep up, it was leading to the final battle, struggling for months.
Thereâd been a loud crash and shouting, causing a break in the fighting in their little room, two of the Leviathanâs hurrying out before returning to their respective fights.
It had only been for a moment before all four of them in the room were cut off from their fights, the Leviathanâs heads exploding after several gun shots.
âWhat the hell?â Â Dean shouted, breathing hard.
âYou might want to get those heads off if you donât want to start fighting again.â
They had stared at the door, a woman lowering her gun, a large knife in her other hand, coated in black blood.
âRose?â Sam asked.
Crowley, at the time, hadnât thought much of it. Â Dressed in heavy boots, jeans and a t-shirt covered in blood, brown hair messy, having been tugged loose during the fighting, it was clear that she was just another hunter.
âDonât just stand there staring Sam,â She said, approaching the closest Leviathan. âGet chopping.â
Once theyâd gone through the room, they took a small breather.
âHow did you find us Rose?â Â Dean asked, Castiel looking at her suspiciously while Sam seemed to share Deanâs expression of concern and confusion.
Rose just raises an eyebrow. Â âDidnât realise I needed an excuse to hunt? Â Especially as something as big as this.â
Crowley had rolled his eyes. Â âAnother hunter, I guess itâs the more the merrier in this case.â
Dark green eyes turned on him, something oddly familiar about them. Â âI would hope so. Â These bastards have been a right pain and frankly, Iâm glad Iâve found others so I donât have to do this by myself.â
âI would prefer you werenât.â Dean growled.
âI have no doubt.â Â Her voice took a hard note. âConsidering you didnât tell me about Bobby.â
Dean flinches but anger flickers across his gaze. Â âWe had no idea where you were Rose. Â We havenât heard from you properly in years.â
âItâs not like you didnât have my number Dean,â She said coldly. Â âAnd no matter whatâs happened between us I still wouldâve expected a message about a man as good as our father being dead.â
âLike you talked to him anyway!â Â Dean said angrily. Â âLike you-â
âHe was the only one I was talking to Dean.â Â Rose snapped. Â âAnd if you sucked up your pride long enough, you might actually realise that I do still care.â
Crowley hadnât been sure why it took him so long, but it finally clicked, staring at her a little amazed. Â âYouâre a bloody Winchester?â
Rose had rolled her eyes and gave a slow clap. Â âWell done. Â Glad to see my names recognisable even though Iâm not wrapped in bloody plaid.â
Dean shot her a dark look and Sam shifted uncomfortably.  âIâm sorry Rose, weâveâŚweâve just been so tied up this-â
âItâs take two seconds to send a message.â Â She said coldly. Â âNow-â
âIâve never heard of Sam and Dean having a sister.â Â Castiel said quietly. âThe angels never mentioned you.â
âWell, Iâm sure if they had it their way, they wouldnât.â Â Rose said, gesturing to Sam and Dean, Dean looking angrier and Sam looking guilty. Â âHowever, I couldnât give a rats arse what the angels know or donât, I donât need the extra shit.â Â She turns back to the door. Â âNow, are we going to do this, or still argue over being a Winchester or not?â
Crowley watched her storm out, a little stunned, before glancing at Sam and Dean. âWow, what did the big brothers do to make her upset?â
âLittle brothers.â Â Dean grunts, his grip tight on his knife. Â âAnd itâs none of your damned business.â
Crowleyâs curiosity had made him watch her, quickly determining that she was an equally as good a hunter as her brothers, except with a colder, harder determination behind her that seemed to fuel every swing and step and calculation. Â Rose was very clearly someone not to mess with.
She helped them distract the Leviathanâs, allowing Dean and Castiel to go after Dick Roman, Sam hurrying after them, leaving her with Crowley.
He watched her easily cut off the head of the final Leviathan in the room, breathing hard. Â âIf they were worried about intimidation, I can see why the boys would never mention you.â
Rose smiles, giving a small laugh. Â âIt's got nothing to do with intimidation, trust me.â Â She rolls her neck before turning her head to listen. Â For the moment, they had peace. Â âAs Dean said though, it's none of your business.â
âEnquiring minds want to know.â Â He said as casually as he could. Â âI would've thought that an older sister would be a big deal.â
She looks at him, properly this time, instead of the mad rush that it had all been. âAh, you must be Crowley.â He smirks but she shakes her head. Â âI wouldn't let that got to your head, you need to remember I've only heard about you from Bobby.â
âWith only charming stories I'm sure.â
âIf you say so.â Â She looked around them, frowning a little at discovering they were alone. Â âIn all honesty, after our history, I'm surprised Sam and Dean so openly work with a demon.â
âWork is not exactly the term I would use darling,â Crowley said. Â âMore, mutual arrangements that I make sure benefit me.â
âThat sounds more like a demon.â Â Noises close by got their attention, Rose quickly out the door, Crowley following.
What they discovered was Sam by himself, staring a little blankly at the room around him.
âSammy?â Rose asked gently, stepping closer to her brother.
Sam looked at her, his eyes wide. Â âThey're...they're gone Ellie...I...what do I do?â
Rose takes in their surroundings, noting the mass of black blood and the stake that Dean had used on Dick Roman.
âThey got sucked into Purgatory with Dick?â Â Crowley asked, following her gaze.
Sam nods. âI couldn't stop it Ellie, I tried.â
âHey,â Rose stepped to him, gaining his full attention. Â âIt's going to be okay Sammy, we'll sort this out, we always do, remember?â
Crowley remembered very vividly watching her comfort her brother, switching from hunter into what he could only describe as motherly, keeping Sam calm. Â It was such a stark contrast that if he hadn't been with her the entire time, he would've thought it was two separate people.
It was the only time he'd met her until now, and from that meeting, he would never have guessed that his life would be in her hands.
âI'm telling you to back off Dean,â She said angrily, standing between Dean and Crowley, Dean glaring at her furiously, gun in hand.
âFor all we know, this needs to happen,â Dean said. Â âThis is the only way to finish it.â
âAnd I can't let you do it!â Â She snapped. âLook at him Dean, he's done.â
âYou haven't known him!â Â Dean yelled. âYou haven't spent years trying to deal with the bastard!â
âI know the stories Dean,â Rose said sternly. Â âAnd I know enough of our luck to understand that it's not going to make a difference.â Â Her gaze flickers across the room. Â âLook at Sam, Dean. Â We need to get him to a hospital, not sit here and argue about this, mostly because I'm not going to let you do it.â
âHe's a monster Rose-â
âHe was a monster.â Rose stepped back towards Crowley, making sure that there was no way that Dean could get to him, Crowley watching her with wide, fearful eyes. âNow, he's human.â
