Last year, Anthony Bourdain interviewed Jacques Pepin at the 92nd St Y, and we happily caught it on tv last night. Two of my absolute favorites. JP answers what a good home cook must have: taste. So true - if you don't have taste, you have a hard time winging it in the kitchen. AB tries to get JP to say what he thinks everyone should know how to cook, if they taught the basics in schools - maybe omelets? Roast chicken? The great JP doesn't answer directly, and takes a path to instead demonstrate the emotional role that food plays in our lives. Roast chicken is made in so many ways around the world, and to each individual, that's "the way" to do it. He doesn't say it, but it makes you question if it's right to teach THE recipe...or do you teach A recipe? Or...just do it? When is it cooked? Figure it out! Regardless, it becomes yours in the sense that it is no longer a meal, a dish, something transactional. When young soldiers are away from home, they miss their mother's soup, their father's cake. Food transcends being food; it becomes comfort, security, home. The best answer arrives when he's asked about what he eats at home - he loves his wife's cooking and "fridge soup". Stars! A Conversation with Anderson Cooper & Gloria Vanderbilt
On Thursday, April 14th, Anderson Cooper and his mom, Gloria Vanderbilt were featured as part of the 92nd Street Y’s conversation series. Ms. Vanderbilt shined with punches of lime green accessories and phenomenal metallic gold sneakers. Anderson was quick to compliment her sneakers, to which she replied, “I feel like I could dance over the moon!”
Cooper and Vanderbilt both don’t see themselves as public figures. They avoid reading news articles when they are featured. But they do look at the pictures!
Two of their recent projects include an HBO documentary titled Nothing Left Unsaid and a (now New York Time’s Bestselling) joint memoir titled The Rainbow Comes and Goes.
Here are some highlights from the evening:
Gloria faces tough times with an outer face/cloak of invisibility.
“Anything that upsets me I see as a warm wind pass through me, and then it’s gone and I’ll be on my way.”
Anderson does NOT think his mother should be on social media.
Gloria: “Should I get on Twitter?
Anderson: “NO.”
Gloria never thought her family’s tumultuous relationship was odd.
“If you’re born in a jungle, you think everyone lives in a jungle. It seems normal to you. “
Anderson loved his mother’s response when they revisited his coming out while writing their book.
“I rejoice in the fact that you’re gay.”
Gloria still believes that her next great love is just around the corner.
“Anderson: You think that a man is waiting for you in a boat in the South of France?”
Gloria: A boat? A yacht!”
Anderson discovered many similarities that they had never openly discussed before.
“We both rediscovered peanut butter at the same time.”
It was evident that Gloria ADORES her son.
Question from the Audience: “What parenting advice do you have for Anderson?
Gloria: “Exactly what [he’s] doing now. Anderson would be the most amazing parent.”
Question from the audience: “What is one thing that you absolutely believe in”
Gloria: “You [Anderson]”
Gloria and Anderson had very clear reasons for writing the book and what they hope readers will get from it.
Anderson: “I didn’t want there to be anything left unsaid.”
Gloria: “[Readers should] not be afraid to trust and tell how they feel to the people that they love. Don’t push out, bring in.”
