Romanticizing Romance

God I’m an idiot. So the only real models I’ve had of a relationship were my beautiful, perfect and wonderful parents. I love them with all my heart along with my brother and I will always cherish the rainy early 2000’s Pathmark trips. However, my dad’s parents were divorced and always awkward with each other but somehow friendly as well. My mom’s parents were divorced at an early age for her and both died when I was young. My great grandparents, a North African “Sicilian” and a Belarusian Jew would often just banter and get at each other for what I hope was fun. But unfortunately they developed Alzheimer’s but beautifully lived with each other until one died! I love them so much. I love my small family. I miss my dead aunt a lot. I really miss my dead grandmother too. I miss my great grandparents so much. Tears are not what this is about, it’s about healthy relationship models. So, growing up, all I had to show me what a relationship was my parents. Besides that, starting at the late age of about 21, I would romanticize the idea of just simply sleeping and waking up with the perfect girl and just hugging her and smiling at each other when we wake up and hugging again. I’ve seen nothing but shit relationships and obvious divorces, so I’ve always felt hopeless and felt that no one will love Travis for all his overly humorous mindsets.

So, one method to cope with this bullshit mindset is obviously mental masochism. Duh. For about FIVE YEARS, I would often drill the lyrics of Cursive’s MASTERPIECE: Doméstica into my ears before sleep EVERY NIGHT. Obviously it shows a fucked up, typical Stockholm syndrome type relationship of two lovers who get at each other but it would always fill me with the hope that someone out there will love Travis for the anxious little (6” isn’t that little) wreck that I am.

This album is not one to shuffle. This album is one to listen to in full with your eyes closed in the dark letting every scream and yelp soak up your open ears and mind. This is an album that will make you feel the empathy of both lovers as each song alternates between the struggles of communication and misunderstanding between the two.

A midwestern classic. Please do me a favor and let this album enter your heart.
