I do actually remember back in my college days I had a game I was working on that was sort of a parody of 16 bit mascot platformers and it was called "Helzy the Pigeon" and you played as a bird with flight mechanics that were vaguely inspired by the dive move from Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel (As well as by the gliderbike vehicle from Rocket: Robot on Wheels).
The idea was it was going to be like a mascot platformer character who lived in a really fucked up world? And there were floating islands everywhere and the level looped in all directions and it was fun to fly around.
I made up a prototype level where the goal was to grab all the collectibles (which would then respawn in different locations once you'd gotten them all) and it was okay, but then I got distracted by Lizzie Smithson and I sort of lost track of the Helzy idea.
It probably wouldn't have been that good, but I'm noticing that the whole 16 bit platformer aesthetic and interest in the games of that genre has kind of dwindled in recent years. I guess Sonic Mania was the last real hurrah of that style of design. Oh well.
