Neptune’s little moons are the exposed guts of worlds Triton destroyed Using JWST's NIRSpec spectrograph, a team led by M. Ryleigh Davis has detected clay minerals on Neptune's small moons Larissa and Galatea and in its rings — the first such detection on any outer solar system body beyond Jupiter. Because these phyllosilicates form only through alteration by liquid water, they must have originated deep inside larger, warmer moons that were destroyed when Triton was captured. Neptune's inner moons may therefore be the exposed interiors of ancient icy worlds.
