The other 1984. While Orwell predicted dystopia, Better Homes and Gardens predicted that we'd all need to hide our processed sugars behind "rustic" pressed tin panels sharp enough to grate a block of parmesan by accident. This pantry represents the peak of the "Country Geese" aesthetic era, featuring a stand mixer in that specific shade of "Harvest Almond" that was legally mandated in all suburban homes. I particularly enjoy the box of RyKrisp front and center, nothing says mid-80s health consciousness like a cracker with the structural integrity of drywall. It is a shrine to domestic order that definitely looked this organized for exactly five minutes before someone shoved a bag of stale chips in there and ruined the feng shui.
Me: I really miss colourful beautiful kitchens like we used to have. One of the most creative rooms in a home should be fun not beige, gray or blah.
People: Yeah, but... lots of women work now!
Me: Uh, what does that have to do with kitchens? I never implied the kitchen is a woman's space (it's not) and regardless of gender, isn't it nice to have a beautiful kitchen and bathroom in general?
People: Colourful and pretty bathrooms and kitchens also make dirtiness more obvious. Beige and gray hides it.
Me: *cringes*... How often do you clean your home?

I stand by the fact that colourful bathrooms and kitchens should make a comeback. I want my space to look like a home not a hotel. And if you're curious, I clean my house every second week top to bottom. The colour of your home doesn't keep it cleaner. I know because I grew in a colourful home and it even smelled clean. Always. Because we ALL contributed to keeping it clean.
Sometimes, I think it is because our was so nice that all of us including the kids were so motivated to keep it nice.
