This little guy is too beautiful not to post a couple more pictures of him! I was lucky enough to spend an amazing morning spent with this stunning leopard cub... A stunning image from the Kruger by @matthieu.rivart.official. Elephant sightings are common throughout the park but always very special. Of course the famous elephant trunk is one of nature’s great marvels. Operating as a fifth limb, the trunk consists of over 150,000 muscle fascicles - bundles of muscle tissue that give a moveable rigidity and provide considerable dexterity to the appendage. This allows the elephant to use the trunk for eating, drinking, touch and even as a snorkel when underwater, in addition to more traditional nasal skills such as olfaction (smelling) and making noise. The mix of power and skill an elephant is able to exhibit with its trunk is incredible - the trunk is powerful enough to tear large branches from trees while being skilled and subtle enough to crack open a peanut without damaging the nut inside! . Some serious drama south of Olifants this week... I’ve just added a new blog post about a huge lioness taking on 5 cheetahs, plus a beautiful leopard and the sad sighting of a male lion clinging on to life. What a cutie by @peterpribylla! It’s also a first ‘collaboration in the field’ post for us too as this guy was one of 5 cubs on the S126 road that I’d seen in the morning - but only just because they were tucked away in the rocks while the pride went out to hunt (near the Sweni waterhole). Peter and I got chatting near a leopard further south and he figured out my terrible directions to find the cubs and get an absolutely brilliant look at them! Wonderful stuff all round! 😁 .
