DEAN WINCHESTER in one random episode per day ‣ 169/327 7.19 OF GRAVE IMPORTANCE
dean winchester. of grave importance
damp and spiky
It’s interesting how Dean is driven back to his season 2 feelings of wrongness about being brought back to life and "the natural order" once they confirm Bobby is with them as a spirit. Dean isn’t consistently all about “the natural order” when it comes to death. He argues with Sam about it in 4.15 and with Tessa in 6.11 (though he’s forced to “come around” to it).
I do kind of get from Dean's choice of words that this relates to his own depression and suicidal thoughts though (or at least—that's what Bobby thinks). And Bobby also seems to suspect this.
DEAN What were you thinking, Bobby? You could be in Heaven right now, drinking beer at Harvelle's, not – not stuck… BOBBY Stuck here with you? We still have work to do. I just thought that was kind of important, Dean. DEAN It's not right, and you know that.
Dean and Bobby's last ever conversation (while Bobby was alive) was about Dean being suicidal and wanting everything to just be over (7.09). Back at the end of season 2 after making his demon deal, Dean and Bobby had a similar conversation, and Dean even told Bobby, "I'm not supposed to be here" as an explanation. So Bobby knows what's up with Dean. And tbh, I have to wonder if when Bobby says "We still have work to do", it isn't necessarily Dick Roman he means. Hell—in "Death's Door" when he refused to go with his reaper, it didn't seem to be with thoughts of unfinished business. It was with thoughts of sharing one last memory with his boys—refusing to abandon them.
In the car with Sam, Dean makes more despairing comments (and this is kind of what I've been thinking Sam's been worried about—that Dean won't take Bobby being back then losing him all over again well—it'll exacerbate his grief):
SAM I mean, do you think it's possible we could – I don't know – make it all work somehow? DEAN I have no idea. Maybe. I've never heard of it. But you know what I do know? It ain't the natural order of things. Everything is supposed to end. You know, he was supposed… And now... What are the odds this ends well? What are the odds?
He just sounds so... exhausted. Like he's thinking, "What if death isn't even an escape?" And... he kind of already knows it isn't. He's been to heaven and he didn't exactly like it there.
