Session 7 Awkward Narcissism: Social Media Aesthetics in an Age of Trolls
Go Rando Benjamin Grosser, 2017
Nowadays on social media most people do not use their real names and some of them share the over photoshopped pictures, we think we can hide ourself and our true feelings and just show people what we want them to see. However some details that we do everyday on social media reveal our true emotions, for instance, “Facebook’s “reactions” let you express how you feel about a link, photo, or status.” Once you click “Like” your personal data is collected and it could be used by companies government or other social media platform for big data anaylising. Go Rando uses social media to against social media collecting our personal data, it also confuses corporate and governmental surveillance. The problem is the reaction of the people in your contacts. Someone caught up with Ben said: “I’d be too worried about the way my contacts would judge the assigned reactions. “Would I offend or shock anyone?” Are you expecting that many people will be as coward as I am? And more generally, what are you expecting people to discover or reflect upon with this work?” “However, whether one uses Go Rando or not, my intention for this work is to provoke individual consideration of the methods and effects of emotional surveillance.” said Ben.
The Garden of Emoji Delights Carla Gannis
Emoji has become an international language on social media, it express how we feel when we text others, Carla Gannis recreated The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch with emojis. The Garden of Earthly Delights became a place full of joy. She uses the trendy vocabulary of signs and digital symbols to disclose the problems that are happening on social media and in our society, “The digital creatures in this work express our emotional obscurity and ambiguity in communicating our feelings, unveiling the technological codifications of today’s language and the intimate, psychological impact of consumer culture on our expressions, gestures and actions.”
We Feel Fine- Jonathan Harris, online project- 2005
This system used by artist to collect millions of datas of emotional posts on social media and gather them together. “Every few minutes, the system used by the artist searches the world’s newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases “I feel” and “I am feeling”. When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the “feeling” expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.).” It collects the data of human feelings and analyze them so that we can know how many people are feeling in the same way like you, i think it helps people to develop the sense of group belonging and make people feel like they are not alone when they feel sad or happy. This is a artwork that makes the world smaller.
