The naval Battle of Salamis was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states under Themistokles and the Persian Empire under King Xerxes in 480 BC. The outnumbered Greeks were victorious. In his tragedy “Persians”, the great tragic poet Aeschylus claims that as the Persians approached, they heard the Greeks sing the above “paean” (battle hymn).
