Los Angeles’s mountains surround a nebulous urban form. Your areas of focus are places distant and discontiguous from each other, but the bowl of the mountains contains it all. So your world is inward-facing and scattered, but protected by the backdrop of mountains as a strong border between you and all else.
Chicago is open, with a strong urban form lining the wide horizon of the lake and the flat midwest on either side. You're sitting in the middle of an airy and open world. The contrast is between the urban shelter and the large world you're at the mercy of.
San Francisco is picturesque compositions of city, land, and water. Lots of views that connect you on land to rows of buildings on hills that lead to the water. It's like an island that constantly shows you where you are and where the city ends, it's a third-person perspective.
