2JSB (Nidaime J SOUL BROTHERS)
After EXILE Vocal Battle Audition 2006 ~ASIAN DREAM~ was held, HIRO decided to start a new project with NESMITH who became one of the finalists and would go on to becoming the first vocalist of a new generation of JSB. NESMITH was already part of the agency LDH (since September 2005) as he had a previous soloist debut, produced by ATSUSHI, with the single titled
Tsuishin (April 12th 2006). This was written by BOUNCEBACK and #U-SKE with lyrics by Atsushi Akimoto (founder and mastermind of idol group AKB48); the b-side, Brand-new day, written by ATSUSHI, Hitoshi Harukawa also with lyrics by Atsushi Akimoto. He became a finalist of the VBA, so HIRO wanted to grant him a second chance and announced that he would be the first member of Nidaime JSB (二代目J SOUL BROTHERS) on January 25th 2007.
Before his soloist adventure, NESMITH had also been part of a Pop duo called STEEL (2001-2002, For Life Records).
Afterwards, KENCHI, KEIJI and TETSUYA were chosen as performers. The next to join at the end of 2006 was SHOKICHI, whom also took part at the same VBA but without reaching the final. SHOKICHI joined EXPG Sapporo’s school in 2006 and was recruited by TETSUYA (instructor) in one of his visits to the headquarters.
KENCHI had been in different dance groups, one of those being POLY-3 (2002) where he danced with TETSUYA and then both of them had met AKIRA during an event. Later on with KEIJI and TETSUYA, he had danced in another group named FULCRUM (2005) and in 2006, he joined EXPG as a dance teacher.
KEIJI had already been in a 2004 stage musical produced by EXILE called HEART of GOLD ~STREET FUTURE OPERA BEAT POPS~ as a dancer. He had also been a member of the dance unit FULCRUM, with KENCHI and TETSUYA. Later on he joined EXPG (2006) to become a dance instructor and also became a member of the dance group BIG DOGGS.
TETSUYA had been a member of FULCRUM first under the name BATTA, then he joined a dance group with AKIRA called RAG POUND (2006). He back danced for EXILE on their shows and he joined EXPG to teach in 2006, whilst back dancing on music videos for singers such as the infamous singer and MC, AI.
In January 2007, EXILE revealed during the beginning of a concert on their tour (EXILE LIVE TOUR 2007 EXILE EVOLUTION) that J Soul Brothers would return with new members. 3 months later, NAOKI and NAOTO joined as performers of 2JSB during a live concert, COLOR LIVE TOUR 2007 BLUE, of the group COLOR.
NAOTO was a performer who had taken part in different dance groups, such as JAZZ DRUG (2003) or SCREAM (2006), whom was also a member of EXPG’s dance crew RAG POUND, where AKIRA, TETSUYA also danced along with NAOKI, the other new member of 2JSB.
Their first single came out in May 2008 and then in February 2009 they released their first and only album. A month later the group stopped getting activities whilst being on a hiatus. It was then announced that they would merge with EXILE.
Singles:
WE! –May 7th 2008
FREAKOUT! – August 20th 2008
Be On Top – November 19th 2008
My Place – January 7th 2009
Album:
J Soul Brothers – February 25th 2009
The second generation of JSB’s music stands out by its strong Hip-Hop/Contemporary R&B of the mid and late 2000’s, with songs produced by the likes of lil’showy (FREAKOUT!, IT’S ALRIGHT), michico and T.Kura (Be On Top, WE!), Nao’ymt (J.S.B. Is Back, Make It Real) and even HIRO (let it go).
Their one and only album had a cover of the first generation of JSB’s song Fly Away which was written by SASA and Yuta Nakano; a cover of Lovers Again from EXILE which was used for the VBA and the original cut for GENERATION which later EXILE covered. The song GENERATION became a sort of anthem for the whole EX-FAMILY male groups. They also had their own version of the song 24karats featuring DOBERMAN INC and EXILE. The album also had the song My Buddy part II featuring EXILE’s newest vocalist member TAKAHIRO.
