Waking up to an empty house was not pleasant. Especially since your boyfriend, François, was supposed to be lying beside you. You groggily stood, calling out for him before searching the house. He was nowhere to be seen. Itâs not like he had a traditional 9-to-5 job, even if he did it was still only Saturday.
It was upsetting to be alone, where could he have gone? You began making coffee, pondering his sudden disappearance. He could be helping Oliver at the bakery, though you doubt it--he wasnât fond of being in that overly-pastel cupcake shop for too long. Maybe heâs with Matt? Unlikely, they donât talk much. Allen? There was no way. Franky was always complaining about Allen calling him a âboomerâ.
As you stirred your fresh cup of coffee, you heard the door open and close. You smiled in relief. Heâs home. The two familiar arms wrapping you up confirmed it, François had returned.
âSorry for leaving you alone, mon cher. I planned to be âome sooner.â He said, releasing you and grabbing his own mug.
âItâs alright.â you said. As he opened the cabinet you caught sight of a certain mug. It was the one you gave him on your one month anniversary. You then realized it was your official one year anniversary. A year ago today, he gave you a single rose and took you to a cliff to have a picnic, looking over the city lights. You expected him to reach for the mug, but he grabbed the one next to it. âOh! Happy anniversary!â
âHm. Letâs watch a movie.â He said, completely ignoring your statement. You were a bit dumbfounded as he walked off with his coffee. Did he just⌠ignore your anniversary reminder?I
You ended up watching a crappy romance movie, your legs on his lap as he sat angled towards you. You couldnât help but notice how he checked his phone often, as if waiting for something. He seemed restless, often looking towards the clock by the front door.
You inhaled softly, excusing yourself to the bathroom. Once in, you only stared at yourself in the mirror. Why is acting like this? Today was supposed to be special. You wanted to make him a wonderful breakfast, his absence in the morning and wish to watch a movie ruined that. Youâd also be lying if you said you weren't selfishly wishing for him to take you out on a nice dinner. Would those wishes be unfulfilled?
You then walked back out, only to see an empty living room and the door swinging closed. You stood in shock. Exhaling softly you decided to get some things done around the house you had been putting off; laundry, dishes, and other ends-n-odds.
Dragging a laundry basket up from the garage, you continued to wonder where Francois went. You were out of excuses for yourself. What if he went back? It was no secret that he was once quite the playboy. Did he go back to his old ways? You dismissed the thought, you had faith in Francois. After past relationships failing due to lack of trust, you felt the need to trust him--it made you feel guilty to even mildly question his faithfulness.
As soon as you entered your bedroom and began folding, the door opened and closed swiftly. You snapped your head towards the door of the bedroom. Walking out you scanned the living room for him--he was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly Francois emerged from behind you, placing his hand on the small of your back. You jumped slightly before turning around to come face to face with him. You sighed in relief.
As the day went on, Francois seemed to be staying home. He also seemed to have forgotten about your anniversary. You were distraught, though you didn't show it. It was upsetting. Maybe you were being selfish for expecting something big from him, maybe just spending time with you was your anniversary gift.
And then he set off again. At least he said goodbye this time before leaving. You were sat on the couch, a random T.V. show playing in the background. You were still thinking about why he would be leaving so much, why heâs always checking his phone, why has he seemed so reserved?
Finally, after episodes and episodes of waiting, he finally pulled back into the driveway. As he entered he finally looked you straight in the eyes. You were visibly upset. He walked over slowly.
  âFrancois?â You asked, hesitantly.
âHm?â He said, sitting next to you on the couch.
  âWhere have you been?â
He swept you up into his own truck. It smelled good in his car, almost like food. He drove up a very familiar path, you recognized where you were going and suddenly felt dumb. The outings? The smell in his truck? The destination? He wasnât ignoring your anniversary, he was preparing for it.
As soon as the car stopped you looked at him. He looked back with admiration, pulling the keys out of the ignition and opening his door. You got out too, immediately looking at the view. This was the place he took you on your first date, it was a picnic over the city, right on a cliff.
Francois pulled out a few baskets, most likely of food. There was a classic white and red picnic blanket sitting on one, you pulled it off the basket and laid it out, he set the baskets down. You both sat as he set up wine glasses and pulled out food. He had prepared a nice spread of food and a chocolate cake. As he finished setting up, he suddenly remembered something.
âOne more zhingâŚâ He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box.
i feel like this ends so abrubtly
