Edwin and Charles are the epitome of "what do you normally do when i'm gone?"/"wait for you to get back"
except its mutual. they both don't quite know what to do with themselves when the other is gone.

just thinking about that one concept of Charles telling Edwin they should get married so they have a claim on each others souls (so Hell can't have Edwin)
but early on in their friendship
Charles is all like hey so you know how you escaped hell and youre running from it bc it still owns your soul...... what if we got married so your soul technically belongs to me?? -- and mine is yours of course.
Edwin is just "... you want to marry me?"
"As best mates of course :))) I'll do anything to keep you safe."
and they lowkey forget about it till Hell nabs Edwin again. But this time Charles argues to the Night Nurse that actually Edwins soul belongs to him. And whips out their marriage certificate.
And shes like 😐 "I'm going to have to file this officially.... but technically your claim is stronger than Hells."
Hell had Edwins soul because of a technicality. But Charles has his soul because Edwin willingly gives himself to him.
do you also think about how there was probably a point where Charles realised he was never going to be good enough for his father..
that he was going to be abused regardless of what he did...
so he decided to fully embrace alternative cultures like punk & rude boy
pierce his ear, shave the sides of his head. make bad choices. knowing his father would hate it, but if he was going to get beaten anyway he may as well do what he liked.
sorry im just imagining a modern au where Edwin downloads grindr and Charles is leaning over his shoulder the whole time judmentally like 'ew no' 'he looks like a foot' 'now i know you have better standards..' 'hes hot but seems insufferable'
Edwin exasperated hands over his phone like 'oh so do you want to pick out men for me? go ahead.'
Charles spends a good 20mins swiping before hes like 😔 'im so sorry mate, none of them deserve you. but dont worry you still have me :) your best mate!'
Edwin is like 🤨 right. Were going to come back to this later.......
(It isnt till Edwin goes on a date that Charles realises the reason he doesnt think any of these guys would be good for Edwin is because he wants to be Edwins boyfriend.)
Edwin accidentally brushes his hand against Charles'. And Charles thinks hes trying to hold hands and hes like 'aww mate, all you had to do was ask' and grabs Edwins hand and starts swinging their joined hands between them.
It wasnt Edwins intention. But tbh hes not upset with this result.

tbh Edwin is lucky ghosts dont show up in photos. bc Charles seems like the kinda guy who'd have a wallet full of candid photos he'd share with anyone who'd give him a moment.
Crystal: honestly. im really into dumb, nice guys. just no thoughts, head empty, pretty face.
Edwin: I have to say your taste does have some merit to it. There is definitely an appeal to a- what did Niko call it.. ah, yes- a 'himbo'.
Charles: ... hey wait a second-
ok so I've been thinking about Hell right. And other people gave brought up how Simons punishment was likely more than just the papercuts based on some of the things he says (thinking Edwins a trick & the headmaster mention)
(but god poor Edwin seeing the boy who caused his death and afterlife torment with a seemingly mild punishment, while he's subjected to being torn apart...)
and how after Edwin forgives him, and after he admits he was wrong and accepts his punishment and apologises, we see the blue light of Death again, and he smiles, implying he's found peace and gone onto his version of heaven.
(and also how Edwin says everywhere becomes hell when you punish yourself)
so it seems that Hell is not eternal punishment, that in the right situation: if you understand your wrongs, accept that this is because of them, if youre genuinely apologetic about it (wonder if apologising to the actual person he wronged helped?) you have a chance at redemption.
But.
Edwin. who did nothing wrong. who was in hell because of a technicality... there is no moment of acceptance, redemption to get him out of Hell (because he's not meant to be there).
And just. the unfairness of Edwin being truly trapped there, unable to get out, because hes not meant to be there!!!!! so the usual rules don't apply for him.
