Rigging with Millie Woodcock
Emanuele Colombo - motion design animation. Interesting style of work.
Tend - Animade (made entirely in after effects except for the hands.)
Rigging a head and creating a head turn. Split elements that will move into different layers. In this example, hair, head, eyes, pupils, mouth. Mask features and hair within the head.
Y position - Position and then split dimensions.
I didn’t like what I did at uni and I wanted to go over the method for rigging the head and I didn’t get round to animating in the session.
This is what I created at home, I like how this animation worked and how I managed to have movement in different areas. I would like to make the pupils move as well as I feel like they look odd without having any movement there.

2D Development - Rigging

Working in After Effects Student share - animation - 19/20 - rigging
Before importing the image - Make sure it is set as a composition (retain layer sizes) so that you can use the layers you have designed the character with.
The pivot points were done as a layer in illustrator so you would have a more accurate idea of where to place the joints. Change this layer into a guide layer by right clicking.
Create shape from vector layers (easier to work on) Can select a colour group Edit - Layer
Man behind wall - hide layers. Diamond - select. set matte. Body outlines.
Duik (Duik Bassel) - Free rigging software. Use this in After Effects.
Pan behind to move anchor points.
Duik - create leg - move points to pivot points. (tab shown below for create)
Once you are happy with where your points are, auto rig and IK. (as shown below)
IK - reverse will switch the way it bends. Auto-stretch off. Will stop the rig ‘breaking’ if you move it too far.
The body needs it’s own pivot system selections of which are shown below. The arrows in the top row show the kind of movement. Top right - Up, down, left, right and rotation.
Select all elements when auto rigging or it won’t connect.
Don’t forget about using principles. Keyframe, size, remove constraints, -100 flipped the other way.
A short gif experimenting with how to move the character with the rig. This only shows movement of the body but it is rigged so that you can control the limbs, the head, the face and the string can be given it’s own controller.

This game took me about two days to make but now its in a process of “I can totally make it better”. This is the beginning of the ‘asteroids’ game I am making now. As you can see, I made a simple game state with if() statements and no UI besides the space bar and the mouse. Now, it Is in a much better improvement. I have got game states with buttons and options for upgrades for the cannon and health.
Well... I am currently working on a game using lwjgl 2. It's based off of the old Atari game Asteroids. The only difference is that you protect your world from incoming asteroids, can upgrade and choose your cannons and has a gravity simulation. Right now I'm about finished and will be posting updates of it here for now, even though I'm almost done with the thing. But, I do have another game in mind and will give constant updates here.
