Sam immediately closes his eyes, but not before Dean sees the fear in them. Dean very very slowly pulls back from Sam, lowering his hands. He hopes it’s nothing. He hopes his dad is just shifting in his sleep. But no - he feels his dad sit up behind him. Under the covers, Dean’s hand quietly moves to rest on Sam’s chest, over Sam’s heart. It’s pounding violently fast.

“Boys?” John’s voice is sleep-gravelly and Dean keeps his mouth shut. Sam’s lips are trembling and his eyes are squeezed tight. He’s desperately trying stay still and quiet.

Dean knows Sam’s been afraid of John for a while now. Ever since his 16th birthday 4 months ago, John’s been treating Sam differently. Expecting so much of him. Yelling at him constantly every time he made even the slightest mistake. John’s been close to hitting him a few times, too, though he never actually has.
