Juliette & Chocolat: Montreal, Canada Edition
Our last breakfast in Canada and of course someone had a sweet tooth itch. Not I of course. I can't handle the overload of sugar during any time of the day. Hence my unhealthy craving for chips and anything salty. Anyways..
I yelped earlier in the morning in search of a good crepes spot. The amount of reviews were extremely low. I'm assuming Montreal/Canada isn't into doing the whole reviews online and would rather depend on word of mouth or concierge recommendations. Juliette & Chocolat seemed to be the most promising spot so off we went.
I never tried savory crepes since I always associated crepes with dessert. Figured I might as well try them now since it was breakfast time and having all that sugar first thing in the morning definitely would have gotten me sick. I ordered the ham, mushroom and mozzarella buckwheat crepe. The fact that it was buckwheat seemed like the grainy taste would be too overpowering but I decided to give it a go still. Bad idea! It really was overpowering and I couldn't enjoy my mushrooms that I love and mozzarella cheese. The ham I needed for substance to actually make it filling. Took several bites of it but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The first time ever that I couldn't tolerate a dish.
Luckily for dessert my friends had the chocolate & peanut butter;Â chocolate, pear & ice cream; and the strawberry, banana and ice cream crepes. Extremely delicious!! Almost made me forget about the horrendous buckwheat crepe. I'm pretty sure most places don't change the flour used so I definitely won't take that one bad encounter and never try a savory crepe again.
Oh and before I forget.. Service was horrendous!! Reviews had stated that service was ridiculously slow but having the New York mentality, I figured we would've thought anything was slow. I think it was safe to say that even anyone from Cali would have been annoyed. Our breakfast that should have been 2 hrs tops took a good 3 hrs something! Do not get seated in the open area in the back. Its like you're in a different country to them.
Overall great dessert crepes, bad savory crepes simply because of the buckweat and horrendously slow service!
