Since the birth of their child, Kenshin rarely left the castle unless needed. He hovered lovingly, checking in on both mother and child, ordering the finest things. But as the years stretched on, their little boy grew older and with his age, came a little more freedom.
And a little more quality alone time for the parents.
The snowy morning spent lying about in bed, wrapped in each otherâs arms. Tender touches and sleepy kisses exchanged in peaceful bliss.
Until a scream, likely of delight but one could never be too careful.
Kenshin untangled himself, a frown now marring his beautiful features. âWait here. Iâll investigate for a threat.â Under dressed for the weather, he exited the room to find the source. It had been his sonâs voice, that much he knew.
Outside, the deep snow had tracks of various sizes marking trails. His seven-year-old scooped his bare hands down, gathering enough to make a ball. Sasuke, on the other side, already had his made, arm cocked back with intent to throw.
His sword unsheathed silently, pressed against the manâs neck in a moment. âThrow that snowball at our child, and youâre dead.â The threat not quite as serious as the ninja had come to expect.
Mai shivered at the frigid cold, unable to overcome her curiosity of the scream. Sasuke had promised to watch over him for the day, and as an honorary uncle, had taken it upon himself to teach him a fun game. âKenshin, I donât think--â
He held his hand up before clapping it onto Sasukeâs shoulder. âYou can be target practice. A valuable and entertaining lesson.â The sword put away, Kenshin turned Sasukeâs shoulders to face his son. âIâll reward each critical hit.â
The boy lit up, bending, and scooping again to create a small pile of ammunition. âFather, watch how good I am!â He tossed hard, smacking the first right into Sasukeâs chest.
âOooh, Iâm wounded,â Sasuke feigned pain, hand gripping his shirt above his heart. The second pelted him right in the groin, which he didnât have fake this time. He shifted uncomfortably but gave the grinning child a thumbs up.
The third, however, was quite off target.
Kenshin still knelt by the ninja, observing with pride at how much his son had learned in a short few months. He intently awaited the next throw, but his vision clouded, cold spreading across his face. The force nearly knocked him off balance.
âOh-â Mai gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. She held her breath, to stave off the impending laughter but it failed. While their son cheered at his most critical hit, Mai turned around, shoulders shaking.
One moment she was firmly on the floor, and the next, an arm was around her waist, lifting her up as a shield. Kenshin brought his lips to her ear as he abandoned the porch for the snowy garden. âItâs funny, is it? Iâll show you.â
âThatâs unfair! I canât throw a snowball at mother!â Their son protested with a big pout on his lips.
âThere are no rules in war, my son. But there are certainly casualties,â Kenshin answered, tickling his free hand into his belovedâs side. Her fit of laughter only fueling the warlord further.Â
Mai managed to wiggle loose, although, she knew heâd let her go. Her socked feet soaked in the cold snow. She scrambled over to her son. âIâll make the snowballs, you throw, okay? We can win if we work together!â
âI do adore your confidence, but I will be the victor of this war!â Kenshin replied, launching a snowball slightly off mark. It exploded against the tree beside them.
It mattered not who won. The three enjoying a snowy day, laughing until their stomachs hurt and their jaws ached. All were chilled to the bone, but it was well worth the memories. Not often did one catch the God of War engaged in childish antics. However, the loving father lowered his guard every once in a while.

It will soon be the time of year when gyms fill up with newcomers
If you contribute to an environment where they feel judged, ridiculed and unwelcome, then you are a big part of the reason why so many Resolutioners fail to continue exercising throughout the year.
I donât care if theyâre using your favorite squat rack.
I donât care if you have to wait for a while before getting a treadmill.
I donât care if you think that they socialize and rest more than they actually workout.
You donât have to be buddy-buddy with every new face, but please stay courteous and respectful towards everyone. You could personally be the difference between whether they continue on this path of an active lifestyle or if they give up after 2 weeks.
So it's late and I'm posting this from my phone (hence the lack of read more for now) and this concept deserves more time and space to grow but rn I have a choice between.doing really tiny snippets-that-could-be-more for Nile week or I can do nothing. I pic the snippets, and I'll see about revisiting them later on.
----
It's been five years. Not to the day, but almost. It's been five years and they're not in Chicago, because that would be too risky. They're not even in Illinois, not even in the United States. Instead, they're in Tunis, just done dismantling a child smuggling operation and taking a well deserved five days break, when Nile exits a supermarket and promptly drops her sandwich on someone's shirt, halfway through an apology before a hand closes, vice-like, over her right wrist.
Nile goes to twist herself free, ready to tell whoever it is off and move on with her day, until she looks up and freezes.
"Mom?"
She sounds small to her own ears, five years old and back from a class outing where her best friend Aminata wasn't and lonely as anything, tears welling in her eyes and in her throat and every inch of her until she's sobbing, right there in the midday sun of Tunis. On her shoulders, there are hands, bird-light at first and then hard as iron, strong as love as they grip her, pull her forward into the familiar warmth of her mother's arms, the smell of shea butter on her skin.
"My baby," her mother says in her ear, quiet and strangled with tears, "my little girl, my baby."
"Mom," Nile manages through her sobs, "mom I'm sorry, I--"
"Hush," her mother says, growing loud now as she pushes her at arm's length, "none of that! You're alive! My baby is alive! This is the best--baby we were so devastated! We thought you were dead!
Nile is about to answer when she remembers where they are--outside, in the dirt, in public. She hugs her mother again, pressing her to her chest before bringing them both to their knees and using her free hand to text Andy.
'I need the safehouse to myself, ETA 20mn.'
'Why?'
'Because you can leave for a bit or meet my mother.'
Nile doesn't wait for an answer: Andy will either have everyone out by the time they get there or she won't. No need to talk about it at length.
"Listen, I can explain but not here. Are you on your own?"
"Jordan is supposed to meet me here in...ten minutes."
Nile nods, and looks at her mother. She looks smaller than before somehow, more tired but just as full of lost, just as tender as Nile remembers her. Five years make a difference, though, and seeing her now, older with thin streaks of white beginning to grow into her hair--Nile's heart squeezes in her chest, throat closing again. She makes herself breathe through it, squeezing her mother's hand tight in hers, before she says:
"I don't want to catch everyone's attention here, you know how he is."
Her little brother, so full of life and joy--never met a good thing that didn't make him explode with delight. They meet here, they'll have the whole blocks eyes on them in five seconds flat.
"Oh, baby," her mother says, eyes growing shiny again, "are you in trouble? Is something wrong?"
"No, no, I'm fine," Nile promise, a grin floating to her lips as she presses close to her mom again, "I promise. It's just... There's a lot I need to explain, and I don't want to do it in the streets. Can you collect Jordan and meet me at the address I'll text you? I promise I'll tell you everything then."
"Baby you're scaring me," her mother says. "But alright, I will. When?"
"Soon as you can. Here."
It's an old house in the outskirts of the city, a bit shabby, but at least it's better than that cave in Siberia for last year. Looks like a place people could reasonably live in. Nile thinks, insanely, that she'll have to clean it up before her mother arrives either way, make it look more presentable. She chuckles, and then shakes her head when her mom looks askance at her.
"Just worrying about stray socks, mom."
"My silly girl," her mother says. "My baby girl. You could bring me to a house overtaken with unwashed panties right now and I still wouldn't care."
Nile laughs, bubbling and bright in her chest, and kisses her mother's cheek, hugging her tight before she promises:
"No dirty undies, promise. Be there as soon as you can. I'll tell you everything."
She hurries to the car after that, knowing it's her last chance to keep her reunion with her brother private and uninterrupted.
She drives back to the current safehouse with sunlight singing in her veins.

Iâd just like to take a moment to say, in case anyone needed to hear it, youâre allowed to keep loving the stories that are important to you.Â
Obviously, Iâm talking about Harry Potter and the fact that JKR is incapable of keeping her transphobic mouth shut, but like, itâs not just that. I donât care what it is. We have this culture that often says we have to reject things when they turn out to be problematic in some way. And Iâm not saying we should ignore those problems--we should be aware of and talk about them and deal with them.Â
But youâre allowed to keep enjoying things. Youâre allowed to continue to love things that are or were important to you. If a character or a story or a movie or book or even a person has impacted your life in a positive way, in a meaningful way, then youâre allowed to keep that part of you.Â
I canât make her take back what she said, but neither does she get to take those books or those characters away from me, or anyone else. Theyâre mine now, theyâre ours now, and she is never. getting. them. back. Not even from my cold, dead, nonbinary hands.
Tl;dr: Death of the author, long live fandom, steal what you like from canon and run away. Now everyone go read @ink-splotchâs trans girl Harry fic because itâs beautiful and gives me life
