In which Victor Hugo expects us to be intimately familiar with obscure bits of the history of the Catholic church! His, “those of you who have read Martin Verga will, of course, recall” bit always makes me laugh. Yes Hugo, you are very clever, to have made up cited such a figure. Points for you.

(I do like that he throws in these details, honestly. It just makes me laugh at the same time.)

But the actual point is to situate his imaginary convent of imaginary nuns in a very non-imaginary historical and social context. He likes to do that, to weave fiction and history into a seamless tapestry. It makes for a much more compelling narrative, and, in a book like this, where he’s actively trying to change the course of history, an effective one. You make the world familiar enough to your readers that they know it, and then tweak the details, show them an aspect of their world they’ve never seen, or present them with a possible future that seems entirely within their grasp, if they only reach for it.

Here, of course, he’s not aiming for anything quite as lofty, merely giving us a bunch of background to set up the person Cosette is going to become and also to have Opinions, but it’s all part and parcel of the same deal. (Hugo would have written amazing alternate history, if he’d been into it. He’s got the right balance of attention to detail and willingness to throw out facts that don’t work with his narrative.)

So we learn about the nuns, and their practices in broad strokes. It’s... pretty intense. I wonder how much of this be based on existing orders. I don’t know enough about nuns to say and, honestly, I don’t know enough about Hugo either. It certainly seems plausible enough, but see the aforementioned ‘don’t know enough about nuns.’ Much like with the Bishop, this section and the next one are where my utter lack of Catholic background really impede my understanding of the message.

The key things to take away from this first pass, I think, are the strictness of the rules and the utter lack of men. (Although the pointed note about the coffin under the altar is one of those patented Hugolian, “throw a bunch of details at the reader, including one that is Plot Foreshadowing” passages. Is anyone tracking how many of those we’ve had so far? I can think of several, but I haven’t been keeping count.) These are going to be important themes, both because of the plot and as part of the general philosophical point Hugo is making.

(And especially because of the already much-discussed emphasis on motherhood. Nuns, by definition, are not mothers. But we’ll get to that.)

The other thing he emphasizes, the part that, i think, he actually admires in all of this, is their dedication to service. He admired that aspect of Simplice and Perpetue as well. These nuns do not go out into the world and care for the sick, but they pray for the world, take on all of its sins and sacrifice themselves in order to make amends. It’s very Christ-like and, for someone who believes as strongly in the power of prayer and the Divine as Hugo does, the spiritual equivalent of the work Simplice and Perpetue did.

2.6.1

This is a convent with a physical appearance full of contradictions. The entrance is smiling, the courtyard is pleasant, yet the building itself is somber and tomb like. There is both a feeling that treasure might be found here, as well as the feeling that this place is too gloomy for existence.

Hugo details the history, associations, and especially the rules and observances of the Benedictine-Bernadine convent of the Perpetual Adoration on the Rue Petit Picpus.

So, Cosette and Jean Valjean basically managed to land in the most intense and insular convent possible. [Second only to the Carmelites, says Vicky.] On the one hand, this is probably very good for their 'hiding from the police' prospects. On the other... Well, it'll be an experience. Coming from a Catholic background, I can sort of see why this hard rule is appealing to some, but it also sounds exhausting. Can't sleep a full night, no privacy, no uninterrupted thoughts, practically no visitors... The casual way Vicky mentions that 'three went insane' almost seems low after all that.

I do like how Hugs casually worked in his callbacks (visitors' experience, the nun 'at the post') and foreshadowing (all that funeral context) into the overall narrative of the convent. But he left out the other great occupation of this convent: the school. I do sort of wonder how the rules of the nuns affect classes. Do the teachers get assigned night shifts for the prayer rotations? Do other nuns substitute when Mother Nativity has the 4am-4pm atonement block and can't teach the morning math classes? Do the nuns of the GrabBag!Bonus!Convent ever help with the teaching and communal prayer roster or are they all strictly freelance?
