Contrary to popular belief, there was a time of the day
when Ozryel was still. Right after work, when there
were no more reapings he had to attend to, when he
finished the list no one gave him (before it’s rewritten),
the Angel of Death is quiet. Whether it’s to bear witness,
or pray, or just to take a break is unclear, possibly even
to him, but either way, he does it.
He’s on a highrise in Dubai at the moment, his legs
dangling off the edge of one of the taller buildings in
the world. The first ten minutes had been spent
looking down at the cars, musing about plans made
by ancient people, comparing, contrasting. The
whole affair got a bit cliche, however, so he settled
on studying his vessel.
Humans are interesting. They’re amazingly complicated,
yet inherently not, at least to angels. Each was different,
unique in some way. Some were more noticeable than
others, however; Spencer Reid was one of those people.
What a mind. What a bloody mind. The pure amount of
it was astonishing, even overwhelming when Ozryel
first entered. Memory and sense and data all moving
together in a perfect symphony, flickering in and out
of synapses and soul. When meshed with grace,
infra-sound and ancient light, it was...extraordinary. His
vessel was extraordinary. An intricate puzzle he had
to get to the bottom of.
Today he finds himself fixated on the flesh of their arm, of
all things. Fingers, veins, cells, nerves. Longer than
usual. Refined with constant movement. He still finds
himself confused by physicality sometimes. It’s weird
to be solid. He flexes their hand, raises the limb up
and down. He looks the skin up and down, smooth and
pale and dappled with small pink dots. Scars. He knows
what they are, obviously. He’s seen the same on many
a corpse, he’s seen them in in Spencer’s own memory..
He can’t focus on it too hard; the toxic loss of control is
too vivid for something as immense as him. So is the pain,
the guilt, the need it brought, almost, but he endures that.
He wants to understand. He wants to help.
Grace nudges the soul out of dormancy, light yet firm.
