Shiffrin back on form, leads 1st run of World Cup slalom

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland/January 28, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Mikaela Shiffrin got back to her favorite event and back on the top of the leaderboard in a World Cup slalom on Sunday.

Unbeaten in slalom since November, the American star was 0.65 seconds faster in the first run than Wendy Holdener of Switzerland.

Third-placed Frida Hansdotter of Sweden had 0.83 to make up on Shiffrin in the second run in the afternoon.

Shiffrin started the year with five straight World Cup wins, including three in traditional slalom, to extend her big lead in the overall World Cup standings. However, her winless streak is now five races since the last slalom on Jan. 9 at Flachau, Austria.

After a cautious start Sunday, Shiffrin raced down the bottom half of the course at least 0.78 faster than any rival.

Shiffrin has rare fall as Mowinckel leads 1st run of GS

SAN VIGILIO DI MAREBBE, Italy/January 23, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin had an uncharacteristic fall and Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway held a slim lead following the first run of a challenging giant slalom on Tuesday.

Seeking her first victory, Mowinckel held a 0.08-second lead over Marta Bassino of Italy and was 0.09 ahead of Viktoria Rebensburg at the Kronplatz resort.

Shiffrin lost control of her inside ski coming around a turn as she entered the steepest section of a slope named Erta, which translates as steep. Shiffrin slid a long way down the course but immediately got up and was not injured.

After missing a gate on Sunday in a super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, it marks the first time in Shiffrin’s career that she has failed to finish two consecutive races.

World Cup leader Hirscher fastest in 1st run of slalom

WENGEN, Switzerland/January 14, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Marcel Hirscher is on track for a fifth straight win in World Cup slalom, taking a clear lead in the first run on Sunday.

The Austrian star was 0.35 seconds faster than Andre Myhrer of Sweden, who wore bib No. 2 and got second use of a clean snow surface.

Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway was third, trailing 0.59 behind Hirscher who leads their duels in the season-long standings.

Hirscher is the six-time defending overall World Cup champion, and swept the giant slalom and slalom races at nearby Adelboden last weekend.

The home Swiss team quickly lost its best hope, when Alpine combined world champion Luca Aerni straddled the fifth gate.

Britain’s Dave Ryding also skied out and risks losing his place in the elite group of top-seven starters.
