You got it!! I hope you like it ^^
#12 “Jesus, you’re acting like you don’t even want to touch me!”
Emil was a patient person. A kind person. But everyone has their limits. And Michele, either through his own self-centered nature or pure ignorance, found that out the hard way.
They were dating. At least, that’s what they’d called it. After years of dancing around it - Sara’s words - Emil and Michele finally confessed.
Well, to be more specific, Emil confessed - down on one knee, for goodness sake - and Michele, face flushed with embarrassment and a few other emotions he’d rather not share, quickly agreed, begging him to get up off of the floor.
But not much had changed.
They saw each other at competitions and when Emil would ‘swing by’ in the off season. But that wasn’t unusual.
And then Michele really started to notice something.
When they were together, Emil didn’t wrap his arm around him like he used to. Nor did he attempt public displays of affection - although, Michele was grateful for that. But now, even in private, Emil kept his distance. And that made Michele uneasy.
So, one night at dinner - Sara had left them alone in the twins’ shared apartment - Michele brought it up. “Are you unhappy, Emil?” he asked.
The other snapped his head up, his mouth overstuffed with homemade bruschetta. “Whhhpmh?” Then he swallowed. “What?”
“Are you unhappy?” Michele repeated and then added, “With this?”
Emil regarded him, his eyes, which were normally bright and sparkling and filled with unbridled cheer, were now a bit dim. “The dinner?” he asked, voice low and gaze averted.
Michele frowned. “Not the dinner.” He drew his brows down. “You know what I mean.”
“I won’t know anything if you don’t tell me, Mickey,” Emil replied, eyes still downcast.
Perhaps it was time to tell him. “Lately,” Michele began, “You’ve been acting…strange.”
Emil busied himself with tracing his fingers along the edge of the table. “Strange?” he repeated.
“You don’t seem yourself,” Michele went on. “You don’t sit as close as you used to and you don’t hang all over me and-” he came to a halt when Emil snorted out a bitter laugh. “Do you find this amusing?” he asked, unprepared for the wave of anger that washed over him.
“To be honest, Mickey. I do.” Emil shrugged his shoulders and then shook his head. “Actually, it’s not amusing, more…ironic.”
“Ironic…” Michele parroted, blinking. “I fail to see the irony, here.”
“Sorry, Mickey.” He sighed, still looking away.
“What’s going on, Emil?” Michele pressed. “You seem so distant. You won’t look at me.” He clenched his fists under the table. “Jesus, you’ve been acting like you don’t even want to touch me!”
At that, Emil finally met his gaze and Michele sucked in a breath at the pain he saw reflected in his dark blue eyes.
Michele was taken aback. Did Emil mean to imply that he truly didn’t want to touch him? Was Michele repulsive in some way?
“You’re overthinking it,” Emil interrupted, gaze dropping again. “Every time I put my arm around you, you’d push me off. Every time I reached for you, you’d flinch away. Or shout at me.” He paused, teeth coming to worry at his lower lip. “Eventually, I just…gave up.”
So that was it. It had been all Michele’s doing. “Emil…”
“So, to answer your question from earlier.” He swallowed. “Yes, I’m unhappy.”
#painWow, this one cut too deep, I think. Sorry. I hope it was angsty, enough!
