I don't know much about history, it used to be my worst subject at school, and I only recently found it to be more interesting now that I don't have to memorize a bunch of stuff for a test. In a very concise way, tho: iron maidens weren’t decorations either bc they did not exist at all until the late 1700.
They’re based on a -real- barrel called schandmantel once used by civilian authorities to publicly humiliate certain criminals (umiliate, not torture!), barrels that had no metal spikes at all until -wait for it- the late 1700. The maidens, inspired by those barrels were then created to evoke a false “gothic, horror middle age” aesthetic that was liked in that period and well into the victorian era (think works like the Castle of Otranto).
Then they were used to push that “booh, cruel and barbaric ME Church! Booo” anticlericalism, but even in late 1800 historians were already calling bullshit on the Maidens as middle age inventions (as if Me people had any intention to waste so much invaluable metal for torture purposes! A rope was more than enough to inflict pain and costed nothing).
