Title: Ajax Defends Patroclus's Corpse Artist: Giulio Romano (Italian [Roman], 1499-1546) Date: 1538-39 (Cinquecento) Genre: mythological art Movement: Mannerism Medium: fresco Location: Palazzo Ducale, Mantua, Italy
Giulio Romano, born Giulio Pippi in the then-Papal States, was a major fresco painter active in Mantua. His dramatic battle scenes, with active figures in distorted poses, helped define Mannerism as a movement distinct from High Renaissance classicism.
This scene illustrates Iliad Book 17. At the end of the previous book, Patroclus, wearing Achilles's armor, was slain by Hector, who then stripped him bare. Now, Telamonian Ajax (at center), aided by Menelaus, defends the naked corpse, while fighting swirls all around them.
