Background: The 10th anniversary of the fall of New York's World Trade Center is this Sunday. Brian August and his team of developers at Kickstarter are looking to memorialize the tragedy with 110 Stories, an augmented-reality app for iOS that will place the iconic buildings back into the New York skyline. The app will work by directing the user to point an iPhone camera at the former site of the towers. It will then etch an image of the towers over the picture and allow for comments that can be shared with others. August topped his Kickstarter goal of $25,000. He also plans to launch a series of art installations around the city that will stand as real-world representations of the towers.

Thoughts: On September 11, 2001, I turned on the TV in my dorm room at 10am, having heard nothing about what happened yet. They were showing a live video of the towers, up in flames. Initially, I thought it was a movie. Unfortunately, it wasn't. A month later, when I went back home to visit, my bus was on the turnpike, approaching the nyc area. If I looked toward Jersey City, I was always able to see them. It was weird that the towers were just gone. I thought Brian August's talk was great. A perfect example of having so much passion to make something happen. You could just tell by the way he spoke that this was such an important part of his life. He wants to relate to the millions of other people who were affected by this tragedy. From some of the video and stills he showed of the app, it seems to be one of the first AR apps that actually looks decent. The scale and positioning of the towers appear to be spot on. The app should be available soon via iTunes, for free.
