Exhibit 52. Katey Red and Ricky B. Derrick Freemanâs World Be Freeman all-star band Location: d.b.a bar, 618 Frenchmen Street, New Orleans, LA. (and yes, this is the same d.b.a. that is in the east village) Link: http://dbabars.com/dbano/ is the venue. The band doesn't have a website. Either that or their SEO is terrible. Price: $5 Hours: This specific show was 10pm, Dec 29th, 2011. The bar itself is open from 5pm "until the wee hours" (their words, not mine) Background: The building dates back to the 1880's, & musicians say the all cypress wood music room is one of the warmest sounding rooms in New Orleans. They feature live music nightly. You would think a band would be easy to google. I found nothing about them in all of cyberspace. Sorry for the lack of background info on the band.
Thoughts: This year I ended 2011 in New Orleans. So it seemed appropriate for #52 and the end of the blog to take place there as well. Just downriver from the French Quarter, the neighborhood that this bar was located in was called the "Marigny" and it was voted one of the hippest neighborhoods in the country. Way less touristy (and way less trashy) than Bourbon. Frenchman street was so cute; wish we could have spent more time there. I'd describe the band as upbeat jazz / rock. The trombone player was a girl that looked a bit like Lisa Loeb, and the trombone was almost the same size as she was. There were 4 other band members, but she was front and center. They played for a very long time without taking a break. You could tell they really enjoyed playing music, and they were very good at it. Rating:Â 8/10
