Just some stuff I dug up whilst digging up photos for the “10 Year Challenge” (available on Social Media™ platforms everywhere).
These are all development art from my first week on “Fish Hooks”. It was our first week and we were so full of fish puns that it was making us sick. We had no choice but to just get it out of our systems so that we could try to move on and make a show. So we had a special meeting one day to exhaust the possibilities.
Top Pic: We were all just spitting things out, so I can’t say who thought of what, but up top you’ve got Coach Salmons and Kim Jong Krill drawn by Alex Hirsch. For whatever reason, Krill didn’t end up in the series.
On the left and bottom are the Chovies and Ann Emeny (I think we renamed Ann Emeny and gave the “Ann” to Ann Chovie) by William Reiss.
Black Molly, and the sadly unused “Marvin Hagfish” were doodled by me.
Mid Pic: The evolution of Albert Glass! Albert was voiced by Atticus Shaffer from “The Middle”. Weirdly, after “Fish Hooks”, I ended up at Warner Bros. where they were still filming “The Middle” and occasionally Atticus would ride by on his bike and say hi. He’s a cool guy like that.
Below that, we’ve got the leech guy and Stickler’s daughter by William Reiss. I don’t think either one ever made it into the show. On the upper right is Rocktopus, who was designed waaaay back at the beginning and didn’t show up until the final episodes.
Bottom Pic: It’s “Rick and Morty” fish from a decade in the future! This was Justin Roiland’s take on a science teacher.
And right below that is William Reiss’ very first take on the Hokey Poke, complete with a blobfish who would eventually become Chief.
Looking back, we came up with a bunch of good characters that day and a couple of story ideas we ended up using. There’s even a “John Waters” fish, and we ended up using Mr. Waters’ voice in our third season. Just goes to show...
