Many would describe Anna Karenina as a great tragedy, but Tolstoy has captured so much more than that. This book is the essence of life itself; it moves from the greatest depths of despair and loss to the heights of spiritual revelation and unrelenting love, with every shade of the minutiae of daily existence in between. Tolstoy’s understanding of the hearts and minds of man - and, even more surprisingly, of woman - surpassed my every expectation and brought me to tears of both joy and sadness on numerous occasions. All in all, Anna Karenina truly is a masterpiece and one of the greatest books I’ve ever read.

How can so much of life be contained within a single day, a single sentence (for we all know Woolf loves her winding sentences)? Mrs. Dalloway is not so much about the titular character as it is about the encapsulation of human consciousness itself. Beautifully written, heartbreakingly profound, and earnest to its core, Mrs. Dalloway peels back the layers of what it means to be alive - even if just for a fleeting moment in time.

As a lover of Jane Austen, it’s no surprise that another Jane has found her way into my heart. Through Brontë’s romantic poeticism and inspired storytelling, the protagonist becomes much more than just another “plain Jane”. Eyre shows us that true beauty lies within - in a smart mind, a true heart, and most importantly, in unshakeable faith and tenacity. The author’s ability to capture the full breadth of this wayward path called life makes this a book that I can turn to again and again, finding new lessons to learn each time I open its pages.
