this year, I’ll try not to think too much this year, I’ll try to stand up for myself this year, I’ll live like I never lived before this is my year for sure
another stupid clumsy story, more accidental aspirations another explosion of silence I think i’m going deaf, or maybe I’m just hearing less this year I’ll try to only listen to myself
I don't usually make New Years resolutions. This past year, though, feels like it passed by me and I just stood there and watched it go. I'm hoping that maybe if I make a list of goals of things I want to do or work on or change, I'll be able to feel more of 2017, even if I don't end up accomplishing all of them. So, in no particular order, here it is: 1. Find a new hobby or rekindle an old one so I have a little something to do that's just mine 2. Go to and experience three new neighborhoods in Chicago 3. Stop picking at my skin- I want to feel confident with my arms bare 4. Finally follow through and visit at least one friend I've been saying I'll visit 5. Buy only clothes I feel good in and work on developing a personal style 6. Complain less at work (and I guess in general) 7. Publish two first author papers 8. Do something about this Trump disaster (volunteer, or as new issues arise, figure out how I can best help) 9. Call out men who are sexist, wrong, or just plain rude- at meetings, in public, wherever 10. Wear more lipstick 11. Work on improving how I communicate when something is wrong 12. Make a LinkedIn 13. Go out to dinner and a movie alone 14. Say yes more often, say no more often

“Where have I been all your life?
Sitting on fences, a novicane for all the senses.
Another year will pass us by; making sense of
nothing, in defense of something.”

2017 was not good. I spent many days feeling empty and thinking I’m not living the life I’ve pictured for myself. 2018 is shrouded in mystery. It’s the year I’m supposed to finish my PhD and transition into a career— but I have nothing figured out and now I feel as though I’m on the wrong path. I guess the best thing to do this coming year is to continue becoming myself, and hopefully some sort of life path will follow naturally.
Some goals for 2018:
1. Be more proactive at easing my anxiety, and make an effort to recognize when I’m starting to spiral.
2. Stop saving the good outfits, the good food, and the good wine for special occasions— these small things can make ordinary days into special occasions.
3. Have more sex.
4. Make a new friend and work hard to develop a connection.
5. Go out to a nice dinner alone.
6. Leave the country— it’s been a while.
7. Write something, anything, that’s not based on work.
8. Continue to call people out for their sexism but stop apologizing afterward.
9. Buy more vinyl.
10. Master three new everyday dinner recipes.
11. Be more sure of my decisions, be more sure of my wants and needs.
