I always forget that Fauchelevent doesn’t start as a peasant, he starts as a tradesman. I think it’s because of his name, honestly. (Fauchelevent translates to Reap-the-wind, and I’ve always though it kind of charming, but it does definitely immediately remind me of the country when I read it.)

Anyway, since we’ve been talking about Javert, I want to look at his actions here. Because I think they prove @taracrowns right when they say that most of the time, Javert is probably a pretty decent cop. Here, we see that he came promptly, assessed the scene, and took what action was available to him. He’s probably also instrumental in keeping the crowd from panicking, just by his sheer presence. When he’s not being confronted with the inherent power structures of his society (i.e. bourgeois vs. prostitute, convict vs. anyone), he’s just fine. The problem, of course, is that being a cop is all about the inherent power structures in society, and not believing that the upper class can break the law, or that the lower class can have legitimate grievances does, by default, kind of make you bad at being The Law. (Mind you, this is applying 21st C understandings of the law, but given how severe Hugo was about Javert’s rigidity, I think some of it translates.)

The thing the people do not do here, of course, is organize. Because, despite how the musical portrays it, Valjean does not singlehandedly lift the cart and free Fauchelevent. He lifts it maybe a couple inches, at absolute most, and then the rest of the crowd comes and helps. Hugo says, “The self-sacrifice of a single man had given strength and courage to all. The cart was lifted by twenty men." I don’t know if this is some kind of commentary of the unwillingness of people to put themselves at risk, or their unwillingness to work together spontaneously, or just Hugo having observed the bystander effect, but it jumped out to me, especially since ‘the people failing to come and help’ is a major theme later.

The infamous affair of Fauchelevent's cart. In which JVJ does his thing (s... 'throw money at a problem' and 'be unbelievably strong'), and Javert does his thing (suspect JVJ, rightly, on the most tenuous of reasons).

I'm willing to accept, for dramatic narrative reasons, that Faunchelevent is stuck such that only a person or a jack could be used to stabilize the cart and save him, but from a physics angle, I'm sort of confused. I can't visualize just how Fauchelevent is stuck here. Cart = 2 wheeled vehicle, and if the horse is down, presumably the front half of the cart is also on the ground. And he's trapped under that part, or possibly the wheel, and there's room for someone to crawl in, but he's also being crushed. Could they get a lever (or at least a small pile of bricks, etc.) into that gap to keep the cart from sinking so quickly? Just how viscous and deep is this mud? What part of the cart is actually on him? Can they cut the harness and lift the fallen traces so that the cart is balanced on its wheels as it should be? It doesn't sound like the wheels are on top of him, but if they were, wouldn't they just have to push it off him? What about unloading the cart to lighten it?

Any insight into the cart situation is much appreciated; diagrams are especially welcome.

I do like that the final resolution isn't just "Madeleine is strong and brave and saves a guy" but "Madeleine is strong and brave and everyone joins in to help at the end".

Interesting that Fauchelevent is also of the too-educated-peasant-not-fully-middle-class demi-class, and is the rare exception to the universal veneration of M. Madeleine. Hmm.
