Gig Review: Vundabar - Rockhal Café - 09.06.2014
Question: why did it take me several listens to Vundabar’s debut album Antics to decide I wanted to go to this free gig? Answer: I didn’t blast it loud enough. So you now know better than to make the same mistake. Don’t try it whilst driving though, it might cause you to be a bit inattentive to speed restrictions – ahem.
Vundabar are a three piece garage rock band from Boston, comprised of Brandon Hagen (lead vocals, guitar), Drew McDonald (drums) and Zack Abramo (bass, backing vocals).
The Rockhal Café was woefully empty, not sure if Whit Monday is a bad date for a gig as such or if it was because of the heat. Brandon for one was soaking wet after his performance, but the way he kept moving on stage makes me doubt it would have been much different with a lower temperature. Despite the sparsely filled venue, the whole band was really into it and you could tell that the chemistry between the three is just right. I was so impressed I even tried to record a video, but as usual, I failed to get some decent quality (I’d like to blame it on my camera, but I’m afraid the problem is me). When I asked Zack if it wasn’t weird to play to such a small „crowd“, he said that it was actually okay as long as at least one person in the room enjoyed their performance. With that attitude and their undisputable talent, they should get far. Vundabar are going to play at a few more festivals in Switzerland and France this month, but there will surely be more dates later this year as they already told me they’d be back in Luxembourg in October or November (and I’ll be there!).
