Ugh... I was sooooo tired yesterday I totally thought to myself, “I’ll post the song tomorrow”. I know I said that I was excited about this post; however, sleep won. Also, realized that my Russian post didn’t post && was on my fkn drafts section. Total mess. Ok, let’s move on. 

I fkn love indigenous cultures. I really do. I have a really deep admiration && love for them, especially Aztec aka Mexica. In the pueblo my parents are from, there’s an obvious amalgamation between the Catholic Church && the indigenous background of Mexico. For many Saints or Virgins, devout followers will chant && dance in a similar fashion to that of their indigenous ancestors. Hence, I was no stranger to the sound && dance of the Aztec culture. 

In this following song/dance that I’m about to show you, it was a very important song that was definitely performed at the Ceremonial Center of Tenochtitlán (Templo Mayor) that possibly looked like this: 

The above temple was the main temple of the city-empire for the Aztecs. The city was laid out facing the four cardinal points (N, S, E && W) && the axis mundi or verical center being the 5th point. The shape it makes is a diamond, which is how the Aztecs thought the universe was laid out: two inverted pyramids.

Thus, the song-dance I’m sharing is the Dance of the White Eagle. When I first watched it, I knew that Aztecs revered all avian animals because they had the ability to roam the heavens. Moreover, in the beginning, Aztecs asked their deity Huizilopochtli for a sign that would tell them where to settle after they had disbursed from Aztlan. The sign came in form of an eagle landing on a cactus with a serpent in its mouth. This dance I believe may be one done as a veneration to the eagle && in minute five of the video, you’ll see the Aztec dancing with the Eagle && four of the Aztecs will lie on the floor facing each cardinal points whilst only one Aztec && the Eagle dance around them as a possible sign of transferring power or protection. There’s a lot I could write but we would need a full class lol. Enjoy!
