She asked for Gendry to be with her when he wasn't a lord. When he was just a boy who was her friend and she cared about. She never wanted to be a lady, so to her, he was perfect the way he was. But he believed it to be impossible. He couldn't ignore her title like she could.
I think it could have worked out, but he would need to realize that he was enough the way he was. But he couldn't, and let her go.
Now that he is a lord, he asks her to marry him. To be his lady. But that shows that he doesn't really know her. That's not want she wants, nor did she ever. She wanted him with nothing to his name. And he needed more for himself before he could consider a relationship with her.
They want different things in life. They have different aspirations. There's no blame, and they still care for each other. But it wouldn't work the way things are.
