Alright, who is ready to unpack the last scene between Maya and Carina in 06x05? Good, because you’re getting some real unpacking anyway
Carina: “I still need you to get help. I want us to be in love and... And have sex and make a baby, and I need you to be getting help. I'm holding on to this boundary, and I'm just asking you to honor it.” Maya: “ My love, I think that growing up with your dad, you developed some control issues.” Carina: “And I feel like you're using the truth in a way that makes it impossible for me to argue.” Maya: “I don't want to argue anymore, okay? I want you to understand that I'm helping myself in a way that works for me. Talking doesn't work for me, okay? I'm working through my anger and my pain in my way. And if that makes you angry, if that hurts you, then you should work on that your way. But trying to control me that's, not gonna work for either of us.”
Let’s preface this by saying: Maya’s (severe) mental health problems are valid and explain why she’s acting the way she does - it does not necessarily excuse it in the long run.
1. Maya and Carina keep pressuring each other and it’s really not a great setup to begin with - and they’re both to blame here
2. Carina voicing a boundary might be the only sane part of this conversation, even though I am not entirely sure what boundary she is trying to communicate here. But at least she tried to stick to the I-Messages system, I guess
3. Maya accusing Carina of having control issues because of her dad might have been true - but the wording was absolutely awful and way out of line. Especially coming from someone who apparently went back to square one about acknowledging that her own dad taught her shit anger and behavioural management
4. Maya might truly believe that she can only manage her anger and pain the way she was taught. This is the hard part and she seems to be miles away from realizing that it might not be the best way to manage hard feelings in the long run.
5. “And if that makes you angry, if that hurts you, then you should work on that your way” - This is where Maya reaches a new low. While yes, in therapeutical setting you do learn that a lot of the time people are not responsible for how people feel about their actions (as in: how they feel/react is up to them to manage), this does NOT apply to abusive/toxic behaviour. This concept is not an excuse to do shit that harms others while shouting “but it’s up to you how you react to that”. Maya is basically saying it’s Carina’s fault that she’s being hurt by her self-destructive behaviours, even though they directly affect her. Carina is not responsible for reacting the way she does to Maya basically destroying herself and her marriage.
6. Carina had her low points too, trying to pressure and emotionally manipulate Maya - this needs to be said, to show that this is, by far, not a one-sided relationship problem.
All this to say: In general I have absolutely NO problem with them depicting the relationship the way they do. Because as I’ve said: their actions and reactions are, at least partially, understandable and somewhat congruent with the trauma and overall mental health problems. What I do have a problem with: that they keep diminishing behaviours that are clearly abusive/toxic - even if they come from a point of trauma/mental illness, they’re not okay. And they cannot keep moving on, pretending that nothing happened. All while certain people out there claim that Maya can’t be held responsible because she is suffering (she is! That doesn’t give you the right to drag loved ones into this mess to the point of hurting them badly) or make other unhealthy claims about unhealthy relationships like Maya’s and Carina’s right now. Right now there is a justified fear that the writers will pretend none of that toxic shit ever happened once Maya either gets help or some tragic accident happens that makes her realize what matters or some other bullshit. It’s not that simple. They can’t snap their fingers and have Maya and/or Carina go “we’re fine now” when they said what they said throughout the last few episodes (and seasons, really). That kind of hurt can take months or even years to process in real life, so at least have both of them acknowledge that what they both! did and said to each other was not okay - mental health problems or not. Again: It’s fine to portray such dysfunctional relationships (they’re the reality for a lot of people), it’s not okay to take so many shortcuts to the point of failing to mention just how certain behaviours aren’t okay or pretending they can be fixed in a matter of a day or two.
