The announcement comes on a Thursday, but Mick has been expecting it for a while. Sure, Gunther hadn't actually said anything to him until a few hours before the public announcement dropped but.. he'd known it was coming.
Sebastian finds him before the dinner that Lewis planned for his retirement and the guilt settles in Mick's chest, heavy along with the weight of his dream being torn away from him. He shouldn't be dragging Seb down, this is his weekend. His last hurrah.
"You okay?" Seb asks him, tucking him into his side, even though they are the same height.
Mick sighs, fighting tears. He's about to be around 19 other drivers, and he doesn't want the emotions to come.
"I don't want to bring you down," Mick mumbles, lips against Seb's hair, relishing in the contact.
"Nonsense," Seb presses closer, "Your happiness is just as important as mine."
Mick inhales sharply at that, that feeling of belonging and love and a place, with someone. Seb says it like it's nothing but it's everything to him.
"This thing with Haas, it's-" Mick looks away, eyes trained on the shiny, patterned floor of the restaurant, "I never seem to belong anywhere, or to anyone. I find my place and then, it's over."
"You belong to me," Sebastian says firmly.
"You're leaving," Mick throws his hands up in defeat.
"I am leaving racing," Seb nods, "But I am not leaving you."
Mick quiets at that, the force behind Sebastian's words as the older man repeats, "You belong to me, you belong with me. You always have and you always will. And now we both have time to explore that, me with retirement and you with time to figure out what's next."
"Promise that you'll help me?" Mick wraps his arms around Sebastian's neck, leaning in close.
"I promise," Sebastian presses their lips together, sealing their future with a kiss.
