Eager to figure out what was going on, Nichkhun hastily turned around to pursue her. As he began to ebb the distance between them, Nichkhun’s eyes jetted wide open upon seeing her suddenly dragged into an alley by a stranger. Without a moment to spare, Nichkhun quickened his pace and followed the pair into the unlit alleyway.

As she was dragged along, Victoria felt a searing pain from her assailant’s tight grip. Despite exerting all of her strength, she was still unable to break free. Hoping to cause a scene, Victoria screamed loudly, “You’re hurting me! Let go!”

Disregarding her entreaties, the man continued to pull her along until they reached the end of alley. With her arm still in his grasp, the man asked, “Where’s the money?” Victoria averted her eyes and paused to catch her breath before she replied, “I don’t have the money, something happened to it.”

Enraged by Victoria’s response; the man released her arm before he mercilessly slapped her across the face. The force expelled from his large course hand sent Victoria sprawling to the ground. Using her hands to cushion the fall, Victoria cried out in pain as she felt the debris on the ground dig deep into her palms.

Looking down at her the man exclaimed, “I’ll teach you to play games with me!” Victoria’s eyes involuntarily slammed shut as she felt herself being pulled up from the ground by her hair. “Let go of her!” demanded Nichkhun as he advanced closer to the scene. Slightly weary of Nichkhun’s sudden appearance, the man reached into his lapel to draw out a concealed blade.

Having noticed the man’s actions, Nichkhun stopped advancing and said hastily, “There’s no need for that!” Recalling his earlier encounter with Victoria, Nichkhun continued to say, “I’ll pay whatever she owes you.” Suddenly, curious as to the young man’s identity, the man asked, “And who exactly are you?”

With his eyes fixed on Victoria’s face, Nichkhun pulled out his pocket book and exclaimed, “I’m someone who has the ability to pay her debt.” Upon seeing the gold emblem on Nichkhun’s bank notes, the man leisurely let go of Victoria’s hair and motioned for Nichkhun to remit the payment.

Without any hesitation, Nichkhun handed the man a stack of bank notes. After he licked his thumb, the man quickly flipped through the ten bank notes, which were each inscribed with a 100,000 won denomination. With a satisfied smirk on his face, the man forcefully shoved Victoria over towards Nichkhun.

Upon seeing Victoria stumble forward, Nichkhun rushed towards her. Having prevented her falling, Nichkhun looked at her worriedly as he asked, “Are you okay?” Victoria nodded her head but was not able to make any response. As Nichkhun placed his arm around Victoria’s shoulders to help guide her away, the man nonchalantly strode past them.

As he walked away, the man said, “Don’t forget about the principal that’s still owed.” Puzzled, Nichkhun called out to him by asking, “What principal?” In response to Nichkhun’s inquiry, the man turned around and replied mockingly, “Silly boy, you shouldn’t take on other people’s debts if you don’t know the whole story. Anyways, ask your girlfriend to fill you on the details.”

With his attention redirected towards Victoria, Nichkhun asked, “What’s he talking about?” After a momentary pause, Victoria leaned away from Nichkhun causing his arm to fall from her shoulders. Unable to meet his gaze, Victoria looked onto the ground as she collected her thoughts. Standing silent, Nichkhun waited patiently for her to reply.

In an audibly shaky tone of voice, Victoria finally replied, “My father owes him a lot of money. Since he couldn’t pay…” Interrupting her mid-sentence, Nichkhun exclaimed with repugnance, “He couldn’t pay, so he sold you?!” Slightly taken aback by the apparent agitation in his voice, Victoria said apologetically, “I’m really sorry for dragging you into this mess. Please don’t bother yourself with this anymore, I’ll figure something out and I promise I’ll find a way to pay you back.”

Without giving Nichkhun a chance to respond, Victoria formally bowed to him before she turned to walk away. She had not taken more than three steps, when she suddenly felt Nichkhun’s hand tightly clasped around her own. After she peered down at their clasped hands, Victoria looked up at Nichkhun and asked, “What are you doing?”

As he guided her forward, Nichkhun exclaimed pensively, “Running away isn’t going to solve anything.” Despite knowing that he was right, Victoria pulled her hand away from him as she reasoned, “If I leave the city, then he won’t be able to find me.” Staring blankly at her, Nichkhun asked, “Will you be able to leave knowing that he’ll go after your father?”

Victoria’s silence prompted Nichkhun to further ask, “What about me and my family; can you really leave knowing that he might come back to the house?” Shaking her head, Victoria replied solemnly, “You’re right. Since it’s like this; I’ll go and get your money back.”

Feeling completely frustrated with Victoria’s inability to comprehend his meaning, Nichkhun stepped in front of her and said sternly, “The money’s not important! Your safety is what matters.” Before she could utter a single word, Nichkhun grabbed her hand once again and lead her out of the alley.       When they emerged from the alleyway, Nichkhun and Victoria heard Butler Yang call out to them. In response, Nichkhun motioned for Butler Yang to bring the car around. After the vehicle pulled up beside them, Nichkhun opened the backseat door and gestured for Victoria to get in. Once she was inside the car, Nichkhun took his seat beside her.

Thinking that it would be best to leave immediately, Butler Yang quickly made a u-turn and headed back towards the Horvejkul estate. While Butler Yang focused on the road, Nichkhun’s attentions were placed primarily on Victoria's injuries.

While he examined the deep cut on her bottom lip, Nichkhun asked, “Does it hurt?” Victoria shook her head and said, “No, it doesn’t.” Looking at her with a stern expression on his face, Nichkhun said, “Don’t lie.”

With her mind focused on the remaining debt, Victoria changed the subject by saying, “I can’t ask you and your family to pay the debt. Maybe I should just go to the police.” After giving the idea some consideration, Nichkhun finally replied, “I’m not sure how the police would handle this situation. If you go to the police, your father might be arrested for this. Since this problem can be solved with money; I’ll just…” Before he could finish his statement, Victoria stated heatedly, “He should be arrested!”

Upon seeing the look of disbelief on Nichkhun’s face, Victoria asked monotonously, “Do you know this is the third time that he’s sold me? Even if you pay this debt, what will happen next month when he does it again? This time, its 20 million won, next time it will be 50 million…” Not knowing what to say, Nichkhun remained silent and waited for her to continue.

As tears formed in her eyes, Victoria covered her face with her hands and said, “He’s my father and I don’t want anything bad to happen to him but he’s never once treated me like a daughter.” Upon hearing her muffled sobs, Nichkhun empathetically reached out for her and pulled her into his arms. As he felt her warm tears wet his shirt, Nichkhun held her a little tighter as he said, “Even if he doesn’t treat you like a daughter, my family will always love you dearly.”

Although, he had hoped to comfort her with his words, Victoria’s sobs grew audibly louder as she moved away from him. Struggling to speak, Victoria finally managed to ask, “How am I going to repay you and your family?” Wanting to put her at ease, Nichkhun replied jokingly, “Well, you can start by buying me a new shirt.”

Even though the tears continued to stream down her face, Victoria couldn’t help but smile at the sight of his soaked polo shirt. Nichkhun reciprocated her smile before he turned to Butler Yang to say, “Tomorrow, go to the bank and withdraw 20 million won from my personal account.” Puzzled, Butler Yang asked, “Young sir, don’t you think it’s best to speak to your grandfather about this issue?”

In response to Butler Yang’s inquiry, Nichkhun said, “Since this is still an amount of money that I can handle; I’d prefer to avoid concerning the adults.” Upon seeing the hesitant look on Butler Yang’s face, Nichkhun asked for both his compliance and silence on the matter. Realizing that there was nothing he could say to dissuade Nichkhun, Butler Yang reluctantly agreed to do as he was told.

A short while later, they arrived at home and were relieved to discover that the rest of the family had not yet returned. After he asked Butler Yang to retrieve the first aid kit, Nichkhun ushered Victoria to his bedroom. While waiting for the medical supplies, Nichkhun looked over the wounds on her lips and hands. Shaking his head, Nichkhun said somberly, “He must have hit you really hard for your lip to split open like that.”

Forcing a smile, Victoria said reassuringly, “I’m sure it just looks worse that it really is.” Nichkhun looked up at her but made no response. After a short while, Butler Yang returned with the medical supplies. Although, Butler Yang had offered to help tend to Victoria’s wounds, Nichkhun instead gave him the task of keeping the rest of the family away. When they were left alone, Nichkhun proceeded to carefully clean the wounds on Victoria’s hands with a swab of antiseptic alcohol. Victoria involuntarily flinched as the stinging sensation set in on her skin. Without diverting his attention away from her hand, Nichkhun said, “I know it stings, but if I don’t apply this, your wound might become infected.”

As she endeavored to stay still while he worked, Victoria could not help but stare at Nichkhun’s face. Hoping to express her gratitude towards him, Victoria said, “Nichkhun, I’ll be forever grateful for everything you’ve done today.” Sparing only a second to glance up at her, Nichkhun replied coolly, “Good” before he proceeded to rifle through the first aid kit. After finding the items he needed, Nichkhun dampened several cotton puffs with warm water. Using his left hand, Nichkhun held onto Victoria’s chin as he gently removed the dried blood from the side of her mouth. As he applied the medicated cream directly onto her lip, Nichkhun said, “This cut won’t heal very well if you don’t apply this cream every day.” Victoria nodded to indicate that she understood and was about to thank him when Butler Yang re-entered the room.

With a tray of food in his hands, Butler Yang made his way over to Nichkhun’s oak study table. After he cleared the table, Butler Yang arranged the dinner dishes and invited the two over to eat. As they took their seats, Butler Yang informed them that he had provided an excuse as to why they would not be joining everyone for dinner downstairs. After they thanked him for everything, Nichkhun and Victoria ate their dinner in silence. Although, they looked at one another from time to time, neither could figure out what should be said. Clearly they were both worn out by the day’s whirlwind of events.
