Bond, surprisingly, was enjoying the black-tie state function despite being there solely as Q’s bodyguard. Eve, acting as M’s bodyguard and date for the evening, had secured them a table out of the way but close enough to the open bar that there was a continuous supply of liquor (though not enough to impede their senses). Once the required schmoozing had been taken care of, the foursome found themselves actually enjoying each others’ company.
Halfway through the evening, Bond returned with another round of drinks to find M sitting alone at the table.
“Sir?”
M nodded to the dance floor as Bond set their drinks down.
Following his gaze, Bond turned to see Q gracefully leading Eve around the dance floor in a slow waltz, his grin almost as bright as the light that reflected from the sequins of her dress. Eve threw her head back in laughter as she missed a step but Q expertly adjusted his feet and continued their smooth arc across the room, the line of his shoulders and gentle arch of his back never changing even as he turned his head closer to center and winked at her.
Bond had always admired the long, graceful lines of Q’s lithe figure, but taking in the delicate control in Q’s posture, he finally recognized his body as the dancer’s form it was.
“Lovely, isn’t she?” M took another sip of scotch as he watched his subordinates, a knowing smirk across his face.
Bond tried to hide his greedy stare behind his glass. “Yes. Lovely.”
