You look for a third option, and find nothing but confrontation.

“Purple what did you see?”  You try to maneuver around him, but he’s a bit taller, and you’re using crutches on slippery rocks— You can’t just look.

He’s pale like he’s seen a ghost. “You really don’t want to know. L...Let’s. We need. To get away from here.” The wind rises and the scent from before— putrid— coming from behind him.

Well, when push comes to shove, he’s still only a twink. So you do just that. You shove him aside. Well placed crutch strikes hurt, actually. He winces, you can see. 

Your eyes settle on what he was hiding from you, and you blanch. No. Nononono— 

The river is obstructed. Not enough to rise the level dramatically, no, just enough to terrify. 

Are those... bodies? That.. that’s where the smell comes from. Bodies. Glistening bodies. Rotting in the river. At least a dozen. But... how? Water pearls from their mouth. Why?

You want to throw up. You take an involuntary step back and almost slip and fall. No. No no no no. You don’t want to fall in this river. 

“Let’s. Let’s get out of here. Far.” 

You don’t want to know how they died (drowned? In so little water?). The forest bristles around you. 

“What if Evets is..?” 

He pulls on your arm. “Then it doesn’t matter anymore.” 

“But...”

“Whoever did this might still be around!”

Your protests die down. He’s right. You need to leave now. Before someone sees you.

“Are you lost?” 

You both freeze up, paces away from the dreadful cairn. 

The new voice rings gentle. You could try to run. It could be deceptive. Or you could turn around and face the newcomer, ask questions you need the answer to.
