Alright, let’s do this again. Here are my random thoughts:

First mention of Fitz’s love for monkeys. And Jemma being excited by weird and gross things.

Peru selfie! **more heart eyes**

“If I need a gun, I’ll take one.” That’s my May.

“Used to work together back in the day...” Is *that* what we’re calling it now?

Fitzsimmons “not cleared for combat” is showing just a tad but they’re hanging in there.

And once again no one would listen to the unappreciated genius and now they’re stuck with the “much, much worse” device “fueled by evil” on the airplane.

“But now I get the sense that Ward doesn’t know which one is Simmons and which one is Fitz.” Muhahaha.

That entire scene including Coulson telling off Ward, Fitzsimmons, and Skye is still one of my favorite scenes.

“But Ward, you can speak 6 languages. Simmons, you have two PhDs in fields I can’t pronounce. And Fitz, you are a rocket scientist. So work it out.” — “I’m good at stuff, too.”

“I’m saying I said there would come a moment when we would regret the decision to go into the field. I didn’t think that would happen in week 1.” Fitzsimmons bickering whilst fitzsimmonsing at the holo table. LOVE IT!

In retrospective, I wonder if there’s significance to Ward’s SO, aka Garrett, recommending he read Matterhorn, but I’m too lazy to start researching the book 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coulson’s collection of historical gadgets **swoon**

Fitz as hostage — Part 1 of many.

“I told you never to call me that.” I love May.

The look on everyone’s faces when Melinda-fucking-May dislocates her wrist, gets out of her cuffs, and knocks out the bad guy: PRICELESS!

Coulson in peril helping people become a team. He did it with the Avengers. Now he did it again (but without dying)

“Simmons, forget what I said before. THIS is the moment we will regret.”

Can I just say that I always read the safety instructions on planes. I would have been so ready (not) for the end of that episode—just like Skye.

“Told you they were good.” HELL YES!

And the Slingshot — aka where we pretend to send things into the sun to destroy when really we keep them in a different location where Hydra can later steal that shit.

Bonding moment with beer. YAY!

Fitzsimmons *technobabbel* Ward: “Guys, English.”

Dun Dun Dun Rising tide Dun Dun Dun.

Good episode to really set the tone of the show.... or so we think!

Again, in “Inescapable,” Fitz accuses of Jemma of wanting to save him: “...taking Coulson up on his offer to get me into the field.” You can clearly see that dynamic here. It’s subtle, but Jemma borderline patronizes Fitz a majority of the episode. You can also see her wrestling with the guilt of getting them both into the field. Something that she herself expresses in “Inescapable.” 

Also, Ward put the 0-8-4 on Fitz’s back, wtf. No wonder he was so freaked out.

May’s visible upset when Coulson is apologizing to her in the cockpit is heartbreaking. She’s clearly angry and fearful of being back in the field. It’s a funny scene, but there’s also some emotional weight there which I love.

Did everyone catch what Coulson said? First sighting of:

“Toldja they were good.” 

Gotta love that consistency.

This will be the only time I ever comment negatively on a performance, but I really don’t like the actress playing Camilla. Her performance took me right out of the story. 

I’m very partial to the last scene before the tag. I think the shot of them drinking beer and watching an (empty) rocket at the Slingshot is very lovely. And the intrigue of Skye being a double agent is nice. 

But I think the “Pilot” is overall a better episode.

My favorite part of this episode is definitely the selfie that FitzSimmons take up on the ruins in Peru. I mean first of all, just the fact that they are so new to being out in the field that they just decided to whip Simmons’ phone out for a quick picture to document their first mission :) But, then to make it even better, I love how they’ve brought back the selfie several times throughout the show. When Fitz pulled it down to put it in his bag in Season 2 and then when it was in the background of FitzSimmons’ shared bunk in Season 4, I think it just shows that through everything they’ve been through, they’ve been through it all together. Anyway, I’m just super glad that they included the selfie scene in 1x02.
