wrt @barbaro-supremacy 's post about marty and how long it took him to bleed out in the garage. i'm definitely not a doctor but after some reading and reading about people talking about personal experiences (though i guess this should be taken with a grain of salt in that case, although there are people who have survived a shot through the heart/chest etc), marty could've died anywhere from a couple of seconds to a full thirty minutes plus: and if surviving that long when you've been in shot in the heart is possible - marty could've been sitting there still alive while joe and vito drove away. he could've still been breathing when they decided to go home
thirty minutes seems like a really long time, but seeing as marty's got a wound on his chest, i think it's all based on where in his heart marty got shot (i'm assuming his heart got hit) - i mean if he didn't get shot in his heart that'd probably be worse cause he'd probably bleed out for a longer time- if he were shot in an important part of the heart, say the aorta, he probably would've died almost instantly - but if he wasn't shot there, it seems he could've been alive for a bit longer. and if i look at him more he could've been shot in the lungs too?
what makes this so much more worse is if you think about marty's innocence, his youthfulness, the unknown knowledge of what the life is really like. he gets shot, falls to the floor and then a wave of shock runs over him, he's scared and he doesn't have the ability or the knowledge to calm himself down, there's a chance that never once has he had to try and handle this level of fear before. he could still be alive when joe and vito see him, he just isn't moving cause he's in absolute terror and he's experiencing shock and by then probably suffering major blood loss as well. it just hurts to think that he maybe tried to move, a hand or something, but couldn't.. because his mind's racing and trying to put everything together but he can't and everything keeps fading. i don't think he would've been able to accept the fact he was dying, not with clemente getting away and feeling like he let everybody down..
i don't like thinking about the tiny chance that if joe and vito went back to see him - with a plan to bury him - he still could've been breathing, even if it was just the tiniest bit possible. maybe he wouldn't have survived the wound and lived on but joe might've been able to say goodbye if he saw that marty was still breathing. even if marty couldn't say goodbye back he'd hear joe and vito
