she had arrived the day of the ball, quite late, and had spent most of the night held up in her quarters, drinking and sulking. she had waited years to see her sister, and yet now that they were within the distance to do so, she felt too nervewracked to even seek her out. her insecurities had ate away at her bit by bit, making her worry that the sister she loved so dearly was going to absolutely despise her entire existence. it was no secret that the two sisters were different. they always had been in many ways, but daena had always feared the distance would rid them of all similarities they might have.
sleep had helped her adjust. with the new days sun on her face she was confident enough to seek her sister out. lyra had been back on to her when she first saw her, and without the reassurance of seeing her face daena hesitated to move forward. but her father had never raised a fearful child, and to be so nervous of seeing her own blood was laughable considering the things she’d faced in the past. “ good morning, lady lyra. “ her voice was solid, shocking even herself. her heart was racing, pounding against her ribcage with the excitement over the idea of being able to spend time with her sibling once more, nevermind the details.
she took the extra few steps forward it took to place her closer to the other woman, head tilted as she came face to face with the friend who had abandoned her all those years ago. for a long time daena had told herself that when she had the chance to spend time with lyra again, she’d refuse to. that she’d abandon her, just as she did when they were children. one day she’d abandon the entire family, sail far away - so that she would never be found again, so that she could unmask the chaos in her veins without concern of the reputation that she would ultimately drag down with her. yet those dreams, the resentment that she had built up over the years, had begun to crumble just at the mere sight of her elder sister.
