I feel like a huge part of the reason that people get bent out of shape about people reading books written by writers who have been bigoted and/or heinous people or who've made problematic choices is because they've forgotten that you don't actually have to buy a book to read it, and therefore you don't have to financially support the author. Idk, maybe that's just me, though.

Like, do I want to financially support Neil Gaiman after finding out what he had been up to? No. But should that stop me from reading his writing if I can get my hands on it without giving him money or if I already own a copy of it? Also no.

(Also, an argument often made is "but if people see that someone likes x written by y then they might go and buy it and financially support the author" which is valid sometimes but also some authors and/or stories are unfortunately just so much a part of the zeitgeist that people will probably hear about them anyway. That being said, there is at least one author whose works I absolutely refuse to engage with in any kind of meaningfully public way no matter how popular her story is because fuck her specifically and I'm petty about it at this point. Iykyk.)

#sometimes it's good to read critically even from writers who we think are scum #or who have done or said horrible things #or who we even just slightly disagree with #so we can learn how to recognize their biases in written wors #*word #and so we can make sure we don't end up in an echochamber #idk #also genuinely if we start socially banning all of the books written by people who have made a mistake we're basically done reading anymore #accountability culture is more growth minded than cancel culture

ugh but it was kinda cute when he called me over to dance the second time bc the first time it was me who went up to him to ask if he wanted to dance but the second time it was bc the song we were learning with my friend who brought us together the first time we met we practiced together so it was playing we had to dance together!! and it was really fun and sweet

#the bitter part is when he asked me to smoke weed with him (during our first dance together i think) and i said yes! (bc yay weed!) but whe #i told my friends they were like no 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♂️ bad idea so i lowkey had a meltdown and cried bc i need to learn how to say no #but lowkey i feel like if i wasn’t as intoxicated as i was i would be in the right mind to look out for myself and smoke with him as a frie #d and not have anything bad happen or whatever my friends were thinking #ugh idk when the guy came back i didn’t even let him speak i just said sorry i changed my mind and he left without a world #*word #that moment replays in my mind bc i feel like a bitch for being a bit dismissive !#idkkkkk

update: i started reading 'the empty grave' last night, but i was too tired to read more than a couple of chapters. anyway, i've been reading it since i woke up and i just realized it is 3:30pm and i haven't had lunch yet

#yes this would likely contributed to the meaning/use of the word 'fag' as a pejorative #*word #f slur #came across this bc i'm reading catcher in the eye and something was described as 'faggy'#so i'm trying to learn more about what he meant by that. it seems he probably meant it in this way as an insult #he may have meant it in a more sincere way bc e was describing the audience of the visiting team's applause #so it's fully possible he meant that it was mostly fags in the audience there to support their fag-master #this is a joke but i'm not romanticizing this practice. the power dynamic allowed a lot of abuse
