tbh bob saginowski is really calculating, it’s just “calculating” is not usually a descriptor we attach to characters that are also deeply kind, honest people. it connotes negative shit. chiefly manipulation

a huge thing i appreciate about bob saginowski (tom hardy’s character in the drop) is how the narrative doesn’t just hinge on bob being underestimated but specifically on his intelligence being underestimated.Â
because it’s incredibly easy to interpret a character being quiet and overly earnest as that character being stupid. but bob is so fucking not unintelligent. he’s incredibly observant, to the point where he spends more time taking in information and stimulation than he does outputting information. hence, not talking much & a general air of watchfulness and contemplation. combined w/ a lack of social graces that bolsters people’s tendency to see him as like...oafish or some shit.
and that’s like. before considering that a lot of people (myself included) got a very strong autistic vibe from bob watching the movie but he’s in an environment that has zero appreciation for that kinda thing, especially his bitter dickbag of a cousin.
