Okay so since I had seen a post about it before I saw the episode and now Iâve seen the episode, I canât stop thinking about it but
we donât know if Connie does or doesnât have detention or suspension for breaking the kidâs arm, it doesnât even actually matter to the plot or episode, Connie is a lot more minor a character than a lot of the others, even though sheâs Stevenâs friend and makes up Stevonnie
but even if she doesnât have detention or suspension from school for breaking a studentâs arm
thereâs a few possibilities for that.
1) Schools typically donât give a shit if you hurt someone if youâre the aggressor. This is a repeated thing said in situations where someone who is bullied has reported the incidents and nothing is done, but the moment they respond to bullying with violence, the hammer comes down hard - on the bullied. Every school is different, and I was home-schooled so I do not know from first-hand experience, but this is a repeated story I have heard on the news and in documentaries and from people talking about their school experiences. School faculty pick out students to be hard on when they do shit, even if itâs super tiny insignificant shit that no one cares about, and pick out students to be super lax with, even if theyâre violent little shits. Itâs possible Connie is seen as a student who is worth protecting from blemishes on her record. But that wouldnât be Connieâs fault, that would be the fault of a corrupt school system.
2) It is weird if the school DID hear about it and didnât punish Connie, but Connie had run away and we donât know if Jeff had even known who Connie was before she flipped him. Jeff couldâve easily just said âi dunno who she is, some Indian girl flipped me in the hallâ and if thereâs a lot of Indian girls at the school and no one at school knows about her swordsmanship training, there might be no reason to think it was Connie
3) Jeff couldâve just not told anyone - it was an otherwise empty hallway and we have no evidence of witnesses. Jeff might notâve even told anyone his arm hurt until he got home. My aunt once kept a broken arm a secret for a whole week when she was a kid. Jeff couldâve even lied about how his arm got broken.
4) a reason to lie about how his arm got broken is that he mightâve been embarrassed that a girl had broken his arm. another reason is that he mightâve thought it was the coolest thing ever, to get flipped, even if his arm was broken by it, and hadnât WANTED to get Connie into trouble.
we have no idea who this Jeff kid is, but he was super nice to Connie and he wants to learn how she had done it. He honestly thought she was cool. for a kid their age, Iâd say thatâs perfectly reasonable to suggest that he either omitted information when asked about his arm or outright lied about how it was broken.
Even if thereâs no grounding or detention or school suspension, you also canât say Connie ISNâT punished for what she had done - she was punishing herself with her guilt because sheâs a good person and had felt bad about what she had done. And she had done the responsible thing and apologized and took steps forward to right what she had done wrong.
Connie is not a bad person because she made a mistake. Connie is not a bad person just because she did not get punished for something she had done wrong, and I repeat that we do not actually know if she has or has not been punished. We do not hear of a punishment nor do we see one on screen, but that doesnât mean itâs not there.
Thereâs lots of things about human characters weâre just not privy to. Like, who Sadieâs dad is. Or when Sour Creamâs birthday is. Or exactly how old the Pizza twins are. And itâs not plot relevant to know if Connie got detention or not. It ultimately does not matter.
It doesnât even matter to Jeff if Connie got punished. Jeff is cool with Connie even though his arm is broken. AND we donât know how much time exactly had passed between fusion training sessions. It couldâve been the next day, it couldâve been next week. It couldâve been that Connieâs detention/suspension was entirely off screen between the first fusion training and the last one and that Connie hadnât been ALLOWED to go to Stevenâs until any sort of punishment was over.
I donât think Connie would even make a big deal out of being in trouble; sheâd completely understand the necessity of punishment in such a situation, but Garnetâs mindfulness lesson also gave her the ability to not let the guilt control her. Itâs possible she didnât mention it to Steven or the Gems at all - or that she had, but that had been off-screen, but thus didnât have to tell him again when she was on screen because Steven already knew.
And Iâve broken a kidâs wrist before on accident when I was a kid. I did not get in trouble for it; it wasnât at school, but Tae Kwon Do class, but I wasnât suspended or told not to come back and my parents certainly hadnât grounded me or anything. No one sued or anything. The kid got his wrist taken care of at the hospital, and his family made the decision to not let him come back. Itâs not nearly as big of a deal as it might seem, especially since apparently bones can break a lot easier than you would think; I had barely touched him and he wasnât supposed to have blocked a kick I had thrown because it was no-contact sparring and it wasnât going to hit him. But I hadnât even thought I had actually hurt him because the touch had been so light between my foot and his wrist, but it fucking broke. But it was an accident, and everyone understood that. Sometimes that shit just happens.
I might be a little sensitive about this because I have an OC that had gotten ripped apart for every little thing she had done wrong and was seen as ânot getting punished enoughâ when she had almost DIED as the result of one of her not-good decisions and was Not Having a Good Time and the literal only explanation I could think of was that the reviewer had been a sexist prick because she was a woman. That or they had just wanted to bully/gaslight me with what was and wasnât appropriate punishments for my OC when I most certainly did not let that OC get away with whatever she wanted and had things like death and betrayal and miscarriage be consequences as the result of her not-good decisions. But the only reason I can find for having issues with Connie not being punished on screen for breaking a kidâs arm when sheâs being taught important mindfulness skills that are being taught to her and built to help her put aside her own overwhelming emotions so she can properly address the situation and actually make things up to Jeff, be in an apology or accepting punishment, is if youâre somehow racist or sexist on such a level that you will only accept self-destruction and groveling for forgiveness as markers that she is not âgetting away with being bad.â
If you want to talk about undeserved forgiveness, letâs talk about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and how Starlight Glimmer is getting a redemption arc when she had brainwashed an entire village of ponies, created a cult, and had robbed several people of their individuality. How Rainbow Dash had achieved her dream of becoming a Wonderbolt, only to have the nickname that had haunted her years of being bullied in flight school to come back and negatively affect her performance in the Wonderbolts and for the solution being to âaccept the nickname and reclaim it because all the Wonderbolts have nicknames that highlight embarrassing things that they had done on their first dayâ when itâs never established that any of the others ALSO have traumatic memories attached to their nicknames and that theyâre basically telling Rainbow Dash to just get over it and Rainbow Dash for some reason deciding âOkay!â and so still no one respects that she doesnât want to be called Rainbow Crash. And donât get me started on Discord and how itâs always rubbed me the wrong way that heâs now a friend to Fluttershy.
Or letâs talk about Soos and Wendy about how shitty those two from Gravity Falls can be and how neither of them have any consequences for shit theyâve done wrong and how itâs like if you donât like either of them you canât talk to anyone about it because everyone else LOVES them even though theyâre pretty selfish to the point of a 22-year-old man is getting angry and arguing with a TWELVE-YEAR-OLD over how he cares more about saving his SISTERâS PET PIG than his stupid feelings and him feeling included and his stupid T-shirts that Dipper will probably never grow into, to the point of a 15/16-year-old manipulating a TWELVE-YEAR-OLD into giving her the day off with full pay when she KNOWS that a little girl canât run a gift shop by herself with only her ALSO TWELVE-year-old brother for help, to the point of same teenager TAKING WITHOUT PERMISSION a WELL-BELOVED HAT from a TWELVE-YEAR-OLD that his great-uncle had given him AS A GIFT all so SHE could have something to remember him by when she KNOWS that he still has a crush on her - and no, it does not matter that she told him that heâs too young for her, itâs still shitty. I canât prove that she was manipulating him to let her get away with shit in season 1, but I sure as hell can think it.
But talking about Connie as though sheâs some kind of horrible person who always gets away with everything bad she does is completely out of line. Especially since the ONLY bad thing I can think of her ever doing IS breaking that kidâs arm.
