King John was on the front lines with his soldiers when his teenage heir came to check in with him. The king was struck down in a nighttime attack, in front of the boy. The boy took up the king’s dropped sword, mounted his war steed, and slaughtered the enemy forces.

When the remaining soldiers surrendered, he cut them down with his father’s sword and returned home a boy king with a bloodstained reputation.

Spark laughed, and it made Derek’s muscles relax even more. God, even just his voice was enough to calm him down. Derek wished their relationship wasn’t what it was. He knew it could never be anything more, but he wished they’d met under different circumstances.

“Well, which is it? Shut up, or talk to you? Or did you need a little bit of relief?” Spark’s voice lowered and it shot straight to Derek’s groin. “Are you in need of some other services, Derek?”

“Don’t do that,” Derek snapped. He hadn’t meant for it to come out so hostile, but Spark didn’t often use that voice with him. His ‘service’ voice. The one he used to get people off. When Derek was having a normal day, he didn’t mind it so much, but today? No, today he felt it go straight to his dick and he did not want to do that to Spark. He didn’t.

He fucking didn’t!

“Sorry, sorry,” Spark said quickly. “Yeesh, it was a bad day, huh? Okay, no problem, let’s make you happy again. As happy as a grumpy motherfucker like you can be, anyway.”

There are only so many times a person can fall before the world becomes a vertical blur. Life, Stiles has found, is much the same way. There are only so many times a person can be born, live, and die before the epochs start to smear into one long, eternal day. Or night, as the case may be.

‘What tactics?’ Derek asks, rolling his eyes. ‘I’m getting him coffee.’

Scott shrugs, starting up the machine. ‘Say what you want Derek, but in my experience it never is ‘just coffee.’’

The sheriff watched him for a moment, then he sighed and turned slightly. He reached out to open a cabinet door beside him, and pulled out a shelf. It was on a track, so it rolled out of the cabinet fairly easily, and held a small CCTV. Derek frowned and inched his chair to the side a little bit so he could get a better angle.

He was looking at a teenager, or someone at least young enough to be the same age as Scott. He was sitting on a bed in what looked to be a larger room, the area he was in surrounded by four glass walls, with his legs crossed and head tilted.

He was also staring directly into the camera, as if he knew someone was watching. A creepy smile slowly slid onto the teen’s face, and he held up one hand, wiggling his fingers in a slow, eery wave.

Derek felt his mouth run dry. He didn’t know who this kid was, but he didn’t like him.

“Who is that?” he asked quietly.

“That,” said the sheriff, “is my son.”

Stiles shrugs, has heard his dad complain about this a dozen times before. Stiles is pretty sure that he and Derek are some kind of magical soulmates and this is the way the world has decided to connect them, but somehow, he doesn’t think that’ll fly as an explanation.
