The smoke settles to reveal JEON EUNAE, a 19 year old witch of Sunseong. She is a dog cafe employee and landlord who appears to be adept in divination and magic sensing – but like most things in Sunseong, there seems to be more to her than meets the eye.
FACECLAIM: Jung Eunbi (Eunha), gfriend
BIOGRAPHY:
her mother has an aura of coffee brown with cream latte art; the shape of her is comfortable in the way fleece blankets are, but her touch is silver, distant and cool, like her eyes.
her father is a cerulean frost: not close enough to be comfortable and yet not crisp enough to become cold. he is there, but he is not; he’s a misty fog that tiny hands never land on when they reach out, instead slipping through him as if he were a ghost.
or maybe she’s meant to be the phantom instead.
she doesn’t remember much of anything earlier than the age of six, but she remembers being told that she has an overactive imagination and will one day stop playing the game she’d never been aware of participating in. when she explains that everything is grey until it moves or speaks, she’s not taken seriously; observations of someone’s mood change in accordance to the color they emit are met with claims of her being creepy, strange --- almost like she’s inhuman. her parents fade over time, melting into colorless unfamiliarity as she’s met with strained half-smiles and minimal conversation, and she wonders what happened --- was there a spark in her palm that pulled their hands from hers, or had she simply become invisible to them?
when she foresees her uncle’s car accident two weeks before it happens, ten year old eunae believes it’s more akin to how the girls in her class look at insects than either of those things.
the whirlwind of the next month is painted in a swirl of green and yellow, confusion tinted with the sense of being betrayed. she's swept up in the care of an older cousin, a soul whose colors were warm and rich, inviting and gentle. she takes to him with an ease that many would not --- lacking wariness or harboring any uncertain or bitter feelings. the frequency in which she communicates with her parents is the lowest she thinks that one might get, despite the financial assistance they provide through bank account deposits and the occasional email.
it’s as though they don’t exist anymore.
her cousin is different --- younger than her parents and yet much older than eunae herself. he’s more open and soft, a bit strange in the way that witches are --- but dinners at the table aren't cold and frigid, and that's what she remembers most of all. he's the color of a sunrise, where the warmth of red blends into lilacs and greens, and the place they live in becomes the home in which her heart lies.
but this doesn’t change the rest of the world.
she's always with the quiet kid group in the school; overlooked in ways both good and bad. never a target but never stood up for, either; a few witches find her just as strange as humans do, and while it's not enough to come close to being a percentage, it does enough. she's withdrawn by sixteen, willing to speak yet not to divulge; the gradients of others are kept to herself.
just as the deaths, accidents, and other predictions are.
she doesn't tell her ecstatic classmate that the one she has a crush on will have their hands coated in blood with a cruel smile on their face; she doesn't tell a friend that his brother, the only tether to his small world, will be gone by the next season. when she watches her teacher sigh in hopelessness, she withholds that he'll hit the lottery and quit this job to work on the hobby he's been spending too little time on.
she doesn't tell her cousin that he's meant to die early; nor does she tell him the suffering that it'll cause another as a result.
others don't take kindly to her strangeness, much as she knows that many dislike having things hidden from them --- but she knows equally well that fate is not meant to be intervened. seeing such things should bother her to some degree, she thinks; it's what she's heard from many sources, that is ‘comes hand in hand’ with attempting to prevent misfortune from falling upon others, but the ability rests in the back of her mind just as naturally and passively as early-taught social etiquette. not once does she think of it as a bother --- it’s a gift, isn’t it? many don’t have that; many never will --- condemning it as a curse seems nearly disrespectful.
three years later, her cousin disappears.
from the moment it happens, eunae is resigned; she doesn’t know how or why he’ll die but she knows when (not too long, now) --- and when it’s asked about, it’s yet another piece of information that she withholds. but she doesn’t lie, no; he’s not dead yet, and that’s all that needed to be shared. wasn’t it?
she thinks so. stepping any further out of line was unfavorable.
she’s eighteen when the support from her parents comes in less amounts, less frequently; the amounts she’d saved up over the years doesn’t continue to grow at a steady rate now that her cousin’s gone and her parents are distantly pushing her more towards adulthood. the strings and ties are still there to fall back on, but she takes steps into supporting herself. downsizing from the dwelling that held the makings of her adolescence and the memories of her belated cousin is step one --- renting it out provides a steady source of income but she still finds work in a cafe in the city to provide more for herself.
she’s nineteen and on her own when the clash in the supernatural world ripples throughout the city. it wasn’t something she saw coming, but it somehow doesn’t feel all too unexpected, either --- she’s a bystander, one that watches from a distance as warnings are issued and heightened in response. she overhears mumblings at work, stances from all sides of response, but she doesn’t feel herself pulled towards any of them. the conflict and disagreement manifest as a dizzying swirl of too many colors --- it gives her a headache, but she waits.
she’s nearing twenty now; she doesn’t know what’s meant to happen, but she knows that something will. that’s how these things work, after all, and waiting for what comes next is all she can see herself doing, as it is all she’s ever done before.
CHARACTERIZATION:
eunae has synesthesia, though the form of which is caused and shaped by her own magic. after manifesting strangely at birth, it caused her senses to scramble and translate in colors instead of the norm. she can see, feel, taste, and hear things in various forms of color, from grey to pastels, from solids to gradients, all under another variety of textures and combinations. it’s very rare that eunae sees colors as they appear to others, as the magic in the vicinity tends to drown out that of inanimate objects they might be interacting with. not to mention that the names of colors and the colors themselves don’t always match to her.
speaks slowly, as if she’s always communicating in a non-native language, even when she’s not. this is due to her always carefully choosing her words and organizing her thoughts before saying anything --- though it often comes off as a natural quirk. more often than not, you’ll catch her staring and observing before she makes an attempt to talk --- if she does so at all.
buys and wears shirts and jackets that are approximately two to three sizes too big for her. there’s seemingly no reason behind this.
though she often reads the moods of those around her, she will not say things such as ‘you seem sad’; instead, she’ll ask why they are the color that they are. this has toned down since her childhood, so that she now does this primarily with those that she is close to. sometimes, she speaks even slower due to this, as it’s something like translation buffer for her.
she doesn’t believe nor advocate the act of attempting to change fate; thus, unless purposefully approached and asked, she won’t readily share any visions that she may have nor will she make any attempts in trying to stop something from happening.
perhaps because of the above, she approaches most things in life objectively. in most cases, she is looked to as a deciding factor for disputes, as she’s rarely biased.
she has a mild disposition and is on the quiet and lowkey end of the personality spectrum. she’s fairly introverted, but it is just as likely to come across her hanging out with her friends as it is to find her wandering around by herself. despite this, she never seems all too close with anyone --- though it takes a keen and observant eye to pick such a detail out.
enjoys participating in harmless pranks, some of which are so minor that they go unnoticed to all but one amused eunae, herself. this doesn’t prevent her from walking so quietly that no one notices her presence until it causes them to jump out of their skin when they realize she’s also in the room --- it also doesn’t prevent her from giving a smirk, though small, whenever she successfully pulls something mischievous off. on that note, she has quite the mischievous streak, even if it’s limited to things only she is amused by (such as appropriate stickers placed in inappropriate places).
her brand of sarcasm is muttered and monotone, often accompanied by a subtle look that somehow communicates her blatant opinions of something or someone.
humans, supernaturals --- everyone is equal in eunae’s eyes. they’re all as equally trustworthy as they are dangerous, and therefore she, once again, takes a neutral stance when it comes to conflict between them.
SPECIALTIES:
precognition (innate, rank 0): eunae’s ability to see the future manifested through magic at an early age. while she has grown up with it, it is completely out of her control; from when she sees things to how they’re shown to what triggers them --- these things are fairly inconsistent. she never sees the full picture of any vision when she receives it --- she might see the ‘when’ of one and the ‘how’ of another, or they may be left completely vague and up for personal interpretation. the capability of changing the outcomes of things she sees is also undetermined, as she has never made an effort to do so, herself.
mood sensing (innate, rank 0): eunae reads the moods of others by assessing the colors in which their aura shows her. her readings of people are not perfect nor are they particularly practiced --- in its natural state, it simply comes off as a natural capability of being perceptive with those around her.
divination (rank I, 20 points): in the event that eunae sees a part of someone’s future and she wishes to or is asked to learn more about it, she can turn to divination to fill in some of the pieces that she misses naturally. her method of divination involves that which her natural magic is attuned to the strongest --- colors. for her to be able to answer the questions that is asked of her, the one asking the questions must draw something that they relate to the question itself. for example, if someone wants to know more about a vision she’s had concerning their lifespan, she’ll have them draw whatever it is that they associate with the term and concept of ‘life’ by way of colored pencils or something of the sort. from there, she’ll be capable of aligning her magic with their own wavelengths in order to properly fill in the blanks that her visions leave. it remains a tricky practice and is not entirely reliable --- just as her precognition, there may be key components that remain missing that change the outcome of the situation entirely. similarly, there is no way for eunae to tell if attempts made to change outcomes will turn misfortunate events around or seal them permanently; she doesn’t suggest changing fate, as the consequences could very well be dire.
magic sensing (rank II, 40 points): by reading a person’s aura, eunae is capable of detecting someone’s magic in ways that may bypass illusions, concealment charms, and other sources of magic that have similar effects. using this, she can determine if someone’s magic is of the inhuman or supernatural sort --- she can determine someone’s general species category, but not what their subspecies happens to be. for example, she can determine that someone is a fae, but she cannot determine what kind of fae they might be. in order for this sense to work, she must directly interact with the person; because it takes its base in her own way of aura visualization, she must first have contact with a source to be able to determine what they might be. this also requires her to particularly search for it, as it is not trained enough to ‘announce’ itself without prompting.
sensory protection (minor ward, 5 points): a ward procured by her cousin to help reduce the chances of eunae experiencing a sensory overload from her surroundings. this works the most in crowds or other loud places --- it dampens the auras and how she perceives her surroundings to a more tolerable state, allowing her to function in a near normal fashion in many settings. she can ‘tune-in’ to certain auras and people, which in turn muffles others in her surroundings. essentially, it’s a method of desaturation; everything is still there, but they’re no longer bright and overwhelming to her. if she remains in a high traffic, high energy, overwhelming area for more than four hours while having the ward constantly active, she’ll begin to feel light-headed, dizzy, and oftentimes nauseous. because of this, it remains important for her to allow herself (and the ward as well) some time to breathe by taking breaks before it reaches the limit.
