Upon seeing the scene cleanly giffed, I just realized that the thigh grab in the Rey and Kylo duel had a practical, platonic purpose.

Rey’s blocking high, which means that she’s throwing her other arm low to balance out the force of the high block.

As Rey moves her hand down and back, it brushes against Kylo, which is reasonable, considering that they’re fighting back to back.

Kylo slices through (?) a Praetorian guard, and because Kylo’s fighting style is very weighty and physically involved, every action has an equal and opposite reaction and all, his hand winds back toward Rey. The one with the lightsaber in it.

Rey, presumably not wanting to continue the tradition of the protagonist losing part of their arm in the second movie, moves it against Kylo because that’s farther from the blade. At that time, she’s also winding up for a kick, and because of the fact that she’s on one leg and Kylo’s hips are pushing her forward, she regains her balance by steadying herself on his thigh.
