But some factions in the fandom had originally concluded that it was the lighting not the crosses in Naomi’s window. They believed the colors of the lighting represented the bisexual flag and now wanted an answer for why this particular lighting was used in the office in this particular scene with Naomi, Dean, and Castiel.

Eventually Wanek answered with this tweet about three days later:

(...) OSM: How was Nick described to you, and did they initially spell out that he was this treacherous Siren? JP: I knew during the audition process, because part of the sides {script pages use for auditioning - Ed} were for scenes after that was revealed. I believe it was in the car and then another was with the two brothers at the end. He was originally described as an FBI Agent and that weird things started happening around him.

(...) OSM: It's interesting because the Siren could have just been a bloodthirsty, needy menace, but they made it deceptive and manipulative. JP: Yeah, It could have been purely sensual, but if a creature like that had to deal with people, its instinct to receive isn't going to fly because of the way it looks. That's why it has to manipulate, and that doesn't happen anywhere else in nature. It could have been just a predatory sexual creature if it had been attractive enough that people would respond to it. OSM: Once the brothers were enthralled and the Siren's true nature was revealed, did you approach Nick's mannerisms or speech pattern any differently? JP: Yeah, at that point, I thought he should be ambiguously sexual. As the FBI Agent he was a guy's guy, but this creature wasn't a guy or a girl. I tried to find something in between and enjoyed having control over these boys in a sexual way. It's a strange way to describe it.

OSM: Considering the Siren initially appears as a female that seduced men, it was almost as if gender wasn't a factor for it. JP: Right, which is really bizarre. There had to be some way to get that across without being ridiculous. When the brothers found out I was the Siren, I couldn't keep acting like a woman and it wouldn't have been real if I kept going as a man. I tried to find something almost neutral, but displaying some kind of sexual tension. It was weird, and I don't know how I came up with that. (...)

Actor-producer Misha Collins shared a video on Twitter Wednesday to explain why a key scene in the final season of Supernatural had notably different dialogue in a version translated for Spanish viewers.(...)

The scene in question is the pivotal moment from Nov. 5's "Despair," in which the angel Castiel (Collins) says he loves Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). In the English version, Castiel says, "I love you," and then Dean responds, "Don't do this, Cas." But in the Spanish version, Dean says, "Y yo a ti, Cas" — "And I you, Cas." Which, obviously, is an entirely different reaction to somebody declaring their love. (...)

Adding to the debate was the fact that a contingent of fans have long wanted the two characters to be a couple, even though the producers have maintained that Dean is straight. As pointed out by the Daily Dot, given that Castiel was sucked into a hell dimension right after declaring his love, the original choice also led some to accuse the show of following the "bury your gays" trope (whereby gay characters are considered dispensable — though in this case, Castiel survived until nearly the series finale). (...) When addressing the Supernatural situation, Collins noted that a "rogue translator" changed the wording.

"Hi, I just wanted to take a moment to explain there is no conspiracy, there never was an alternate ending of episode 15-18 when Cas said, 'I love you,'" Collins said. "Apparently, there was a rogue translator.

"I feel proud of the ending of Supernatural," he continued. "I feel like it was intentionally inclusive and a celebration of someone expressing their truth and having good things come of it. Castiel is not a character that plays into any insidious trope of exclusion in Hollywood... In my opinion, Castiel’s declaration of love was done at his own volition with full knowledge of the consequences of those actions. He went on to rebuild heaven and his action literally saved the world. By expressing who he really was, by making this declaration of love, he literally ends up saving the world. And if that’s not something to celebrate, I don’t know what is. I'm a little irked, that's my irked face." (...) Collins concluded his message by telling fans: "I love you all and I love your passion and I wish we could just take a moment to celebrate the good of this show. I’m sad it’s gone. It was 15 years of the forces of good triumphing over the forces of evil. Was it perfect? No, but I think the world is better off because of it and I’m stickin’ to my guns."

Fans accused the CW of censoring the originally scripted ending, saying the Spanish version is the "real" one. Copies of episodes are often sent to foreign translators in advance, and last-minute changes could, in theory, still be made after they are sent, yet still prior to air. But "Despair" was the final episode shot before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the show's production in March, so an edit would have been locked months in advance. Also, the CW is a network that has many LGBTQ characters, so it's difficult to imagine the network or studio Warner Bros. changing a creative decision if the Spanish version is how the producers actually wanted the scene to play. Context: According to twitter user jolauriang, Jensen told them that a bisexual Dean is not his interpretation of his character, but he’s happy that others find him relatable at Chicon 2019:

   With a television run of 14 seasons and a fan base that refers to itself as a family, Supernatural is one of the most well-known shows of our time. That family is made up of a diverse group of viewers including a large LGBTQ following. These fans have not only supported the show by buying merchandise and watching faithfully, but they also spend thousands of dollars per year on conventions and ignite the show's popularity. Supernatural has cultivated popularity within the queer community by dangling the possibility of representation with no clear plans to act on it.

   Representation is important for many reasons, among which is validation and acceptance. LGBTQ characters, if represented at all, are often the butt of jokes. They are made to be villains or hollow stereotypes. The character from the show, Charlie Bradbury is an exception to this. However, she is not a main character, making this a victory. Queerbaiting is a fan-coined term used in frustration to describe the actions or lack thereof, taken by writers to exploit the hope of representation for the LGBTQ.
