Emerald City Comic Con 2013- Misha Collins
(skip to 21:25)
Fan: Hi, um, so I’m gonna be the first person to bring up Destiel. (audience cheers and screams) So, there was a rumor going around Tumblr that you were talking to a group of fans, and you told them that, uh, you and Jensen and the writers were all aware of this love connection between Dean and Castiel? (audience laughs) And that you guys- (Misha makes a shocked face and the audience laughs more) that you and Jensen played your parts that way, and that the writers are kind of writing a subtext for it? Did you really say this, or did you just decide to troll the people you were talking to and shut down Tumblr?
Misha: Well… (sighs) so I, what- apparently, I said this to a few people? Someone, at some point?
Fan: Yeah, yeah.
Audience member: It’s on film!
Misha: (squints at them) I don’t appreciate your tone. (audience laughs) Um… Alright, well, I will- I will share with you my thoughts on this subject, um, but please don’t tell other people. (audience laughs)
Moderator: It’s a secret.
Audience member: It’s out!
Misha: Um, yes, it’s a- I- it’s a- it’s a- it’s a funny thing, because we really don’t talk about it. Um, the producers and the actors don’t really talk about it that much. Um, I mean it c- it does come up occasionally. But, I do think we all pay lip service to it. (makes a whatever gesture, then touches his nose in the gesture that means he and the audience know something that’s not being said, while the audience laughs and cheers) For instance - this I should not be saying - (audience cheers) um, there was, uh, a line in the last episode that I shot where, um, Jensen’s character, whatever his name is, says, uh, “I love you” to Castiel. And (audience cheers, claps, and screams) And I’m like 98% sure that that was in there partly for that reason. Like, the writers were like, “You know, you know who would really love this? The Internet.” (audience laughs and cheers) So, um, that line didn’t make the final cut, um, (audience aw’s in disappointment) so... for all you know, I’m lying. (audience laughs) But, um, yes it- I think, I think that what I said was true.
Fan: All right.
Misha: And that I was right. (some audience cheers)
Fan: What are your personal feelings on it?
Misha: Whoa.
Fan: You personally.
Misha: Um, wow, we’re really getting into it here, I think. Suddenly, now I feel like I’m in therapy with you. (audience laughs) Um, well, it’s a f- I don’t know. I- uh, it’s a funny thing, because when I- when I first started w- going to conventions, um, usually like once in a convention somebody would get up like yourself and, uh, say something like, you know, horrible, like “Destiel” and (audience laughs) the whole audience would, like, shriek and recoil “No! Don’t! I’m melting!” (audience laughs) and, um, but now everyone is like, “Eh, whatever.”
Audience member: Out proud, baby!
Misha: What’s that?
Audience member: Out proud.
Misha: Yeah! (audience cheers and claps) So yeah, all- all of those pervs came out. (audience laughs) which I think is kind of cool. (audience laughs) Um, it’s- it’s fascinating and it’s so- it’s one of those things, you know, when, um, when you’re studying Shakespeare you don’t really imagine that this is gonna be a feature of your career. (audience laughs) I don’t think. Um, but, it is and (shrugs) sweet. (audience laughs, claps, and cheers)
Fan: Well, we love it, and if you slip any more things in there, we’d definitely appreciate it. (Misha backs away with a scandalized face) (audience laughs and screams)
Moderator: And the left. (gestures to the left side of the audience)
Misha: Just the tip. (audience laughs)
Fan: But, my question, I actually have a question. Um, so, ah, you, like, give a lot to your fans and I was just wondering, like, what inspires you to, like, be so good to us? Because you give us a lot, but like, what do you get from us? That... sounded sexual, sorry. (audience laughs)
Misha: Um, well, I get a lot from the fans, too, I mean, it’s a two-way street. Um.. (audience giggles and catcalls) There was no entendre there. (audience yells sorry) Um, and I think that it- that it’s, um, kind of a l- a dynamic that’s a- that’s fun to play with. Um... (moderator fakes being scandalized) (Misha gives the audience a “What?!” gesture) (audience laughs)
Moderator: Did you do that on purpose?
Misha: Get your minds out of the gutter. (audience catcalls) Um, really grow up. (audience giggles) Um, you know, uh, when I first got on the show and saw this amazing, um, fan community, um, there- I- I immediately saw that there’s kind of an expected dynamic. There’s an expected way that I was… I- I think supposed to behave, and I immediately identified what that was, and kind of started to try to do that. And then, it didn’t work, um, for me. So, then, um, I’ve been just sort of playing with it and, um… (gives another what gesture as the moderator fakes being scandalized again) (audience laughs)
Moderator: He’s totally doing it on purpose.
Misha: Um, and enjoying it in sort of, uh, seeing it as a bit of a social experiment and a crowd sourcing opportunity. (audience groans) No, I mean… (looks at audience)
Audience: Incoherently yells things at Misha, who looks at the host for an explanation
Moderator: You’re losing the crowd.
Misha: Oh, are they angry at me now? (audience yells no)
Fan: Yeah, on Tumblr we had a celebrity, um, bec- go on Tumblr and become friends with a lot of us, and then (audience member yells out “Cole Sprouse”) said it was- I don’t want to name names, but it was Cole Sprouse. And, uh, he was like, “Yeah, we’re cool, Tumblr friends.” And then he, like, stopped and was like, “It was a social experiment.” And we’re- we’re still raw from that.
Misha: Oh.
Fan: It was hard.
Misha: I’m sorry, I’m sorry that you were hurt by that man. (audience laughs) Um, I- um, no, I- I mean it in a kind of good way, like, what can we create together, and how can we be different, and, how can this, you know, dynamic be uh, used to affect change, and- and things like that. Um, and if (audience claps) experiment is a dirty word, then I won’t use it around you anymore. (audience laughs) Um-
Audience member: Experiment all you want. (audience and Misha laugh)
Another audience member: Did you learn it from the pizza guy? (more laughs)
Moderator: (off mic) On to the right.
Misha: Thank you.
Fan:You’re welcome. (audience laughs)
Fan: Um, hi, I’m Marie.
Misha: Hi.
Fan: And I would like to know if you ship Destiel. (audience gives mixed reactions, some yelling No!)
Audience member near the camera: Didn’t we just do this?
Misha: No, although, uh, it’s a good idea.
Audience member: Lies!
Misha: What?
Two audience members: Lies!
Misha: Lies?
More audience members: Lies!
Another audience member: Exactly!
Misha: (shrugs and then laughs) Yes, why do I- why do I, uh, get accused of shipping Destiel so often?
Fan: Because it’s perfect. (audience laughs) (Misha shrugs)
Audience member: He ships Wincest!
Misha: What? (a few cheers, but more groans and “No”s)
Audience member: He ships Wincest!
Another audience member: Fuck off! (some of the audience screams and yells out more comments)
Misha: (nods his head slowly) There you have it. (audience laughs)
Fan: And I’d also like to say you’re really, really pretty, and I love you.
