things i wish i knew when applying to college
disclaimer: iām not a professional. iām not a guidance counselor or anything like that. iām just one well meaning fool trying to disperse some of my wisdom.
the application process
start early. donāt stress about it, but start as soon as you can.
send out as many applications as you can afford to/want to, but donāt apply to places that you wouldnāt want to attend.
if you get free or reduced price lunch, you can use the common app to send applications for free, but you will have to pay to send your act scores (iām not sure about the sat because i didnāt take that)
pick at least one safety school, but again, make sure itās a school youād want to attend.
if you can afford to, donāt be afraid to apply to schools you think areĀ āreaches.ā as long as you have some backups, thereās no harm in applying.
rejection is okay. yes, itās a bit of a heartbreak, but it doesnāt reflect your worth. youāre not any less of a person because you didnāt get into an ivy league.
decision time
tour as many campuses as you can. preferably at a time when classes are in session. youāll get a feel for the culture of the school and itāll be easier to see if itās a good fit for you.
donāt choose a university that you donāt like just because itās prestigious.
donāt be afraid to go to your local community college. if you like the campus, if itās all you can afford, if you donāt want to go too far from home, thatās okay. donāt let other peopleās opinions of community colleges dictate your decision.
listen to the advice of your parents and friends, but remember that youāre the one whoās going to be attending the college you decide on, not them.
try your hardest, do your best,Ā take care of yourself, and remember:Ā there is no wrong way to get an education.
